The largest balloon in the world begins filling with helium from a plastic feeder hose at dawn on Wednesday at White Sands Missile Range New Mexico as the launch progresses amid early morning activity.
Montana Poll shows Nixon with 56 percent to Humphrey’s 26 and Wallace’s 18 across the state. Farm, town, and city results vary, with Nixon strongest among farm residents and Wallace gaining among ranch dwellers. Polls track party preferences and crossbreaks by congressional district.
A Flame engulfed a Caravelle jet near Cap d Antibes as it flew from Ajaccio to Nice. All 95 aboard including 13 children died. The crew of six and passengers were pulled from the Mediterranean as helicopters reported debris over 500 square yards. A pilot message indicated fire aboard before the crash.
Helena March action by the State Board of Education on vocational-technical courses drew a warning from Harriet Miller. The state superintendent of public instruction said the policy will worsen education nationwide and make financing the university system seem easy by comparison.
The state designates Missoula Butte Billings Great Falls and Helena as area vo tech centers with other schools eligible for aid on approved programs. Miss Miller opposed center designations proposing a centralized system of extension centers and specific program approvals. The board approved nine area schools and warned that more centers may follow.
American troops repelled a morning attack 40 miles northwest of Saigon killing 95 enemy fighters. US losses were six dead and 22 wounded as helicopters and armored personnel carriers supported counterfire. Officials reported up to 150 enemy killed in the初 assault with broader fighting in Quang Ngai and Tay Ninh areas.
Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey drew a noisy crowd in Flint Michigan as students and other protesters from the University of Michigan Flint branch surrounded his Democratic campaign event. Security moved the party to exit by the mall rear after demonstrators pressed near the front. Humphrey also spoke in New Orleans and Houston about debates with Nixon and Wallace and criticized Wallace as a segregationist.
Arnold Olsen. D Mont will give the principal address at the September 14 dedication of the Big Hole National Battlefield new visitor center. The project includes an access road parking area and an entrance sign. The site was first set aside in 1883 and later transferred from the Forest Service to the Park Service in 1935.
Wallace assails Republicans at a Little Rock fundraising dinner telling about 700 attendees that GOP promises failed and citing Eisenhower Nixon and Warren. He likened federal troop use in 1957 Arkansas to justify his challenge as Faubus introduced him and denied endorsing him.

A hijacker who seized a Canadian airliner surrendered to authorities after negotiations. The incident disrupted travel and prompted security reviews. Officials did not release further details about motives or potential charges.

A 6 year old boy was pulled from earthquake rubble in Kakhk after being buried nine days. He had fractures and was near death when relatives found him in a basement and carried him to an emergency hospital unconscious.
A two year old boy, Dan Lazzari, son of Mr and Mrs Gilbert Lazzari of 1015 W Granite, was hit by a car on a street in front of a taxi driven by Ronald Lee Miljies of 716 Nevada. He is in serious condition at a Missoula hospital.
The forecast for Butte Anaconda calls for partly cloudy skies and cooler temperatures with a 20 percent chance of rain through tonight and showers possible through Friday. Highs near 72 today, overnight low around 40. One year ago the high was 48 and the low 38.
