Forty three East Side pupils from Jefferson School in grades 1 through 6 transfer to Grant School as Jefferson closes. Parents received closure notices last week. After dismissal, 24 children staged a protest parade with signs urging keeping Jefferson open and vowing to move if it closes.
Mrs. Howard L. Sherman notes she has one child in the school and says no official notification of the closing was received until today. She adds that earlier letters would have allowed petitions to be organized sooner as many parents feel similarly.
Local families near the Jefferson and Grant areas fear hazardous trips for young children traveling to school across a railroad, Mercury Street, and nearby busy roads. Officials note crossings align with shifts at the concentrator and other workings, while Anaconda Co. buys Berkley Pit perimeter property. Enrollment has fallen over two years as relocations loom.
Gov. Spiro Agnew the Republican vice presidential candidate will visit Billings on September 18. Eldon Davenport of Billings said Agnew arrives about noon and will attend a luncheon and rally before heading to Reno for a campaign rally that night.
Montana boards grant area designations to Great Falls and Billings under a new two track vocational education policy. Schools with area status receive state reimbursements plus potential construction funds. Helena Missoula Butte and Great Falls Billings enjoy similar aid with extra funds. The board also approved a $3.4 million biennial vocational budget and proposed construction at Great Falls and Billings in the next biennium.
About 300 students were charged with mob action after a three hour occupation of the Illini Union lounges in Urbana. Police say the protest, tied to housing and scholarship concerns under Project 500, involved damage to furniture chandeliers and portraits and drew roughly 120 officers for arrests.
President Johnson told the American Legion convention there would be no surrender on the installment plan and condemned isolationists. He defended U.S. strategy in Vietnam, warned of higher casualties if bombing stopped, and urged continued air power to pressure enemy forces in the Panhandle.
President Johnson told Russia at a national B'nai B'rith address that the United States will not tolerate force or threats in areas of shared responsibility such as Berlin. He urged Moscow to choose the path of reason to avert a return to Stalin era confrontation and urged peace talks across the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Southeast Asia.
Regents of Montana's University System approve a 1969 71 biennium budget totaling 74 576 050 for six units and agricultural services up 11 8 million from the current period. A 9.5 million proposed building program is discussed including the UM library in Missoula and the Montana State University Life Sciences building in Bozeman.
Bozeman voters pass a 1.4 million revenue bond for a primary and secondary sewage disposal plant with a 1,008 to 434 vote and 26.8 percent turnout. A 500 thousand federal grant raises total project cost to about 2 million, with a diagonally crossing interceptor sewer line. City officials will locate the site northwest of Bozeman and begin final engineering with Thom as Den and Hoskins of Great Falls and Bozeman in 4 to 6 months.
In Washington Spiro T. Agnew assailed Hubert H. Humphrey as soft on inflation communism and law and order. He said Nixon looks Churchillian by contrast and blamed Humphrey for peace at any price. Agnew called himself a blunt counter puncher and said the campaign would remain hard on crime and enemies.
Saigon dispatch reports enemy troops invading Tay Ninh City of 200000 with heavy fighting under way to control the invasion route to Saigon. Allied forces report some key sites under control while the assault aims to threaten Saigon a third time this year.
New York patrolman Richard Wright, on 30 months of service with 74 arrests and five commendations, spotted and stopped a getaway car linked to a Hotel Osborn robbery. He trapped three men on the Major Deegan Expressway approach, recovering cash and ending the hold up.
A car driven by 1st Lt. William Robert Eichert 22 collided with a logging truck on U.S. 10A ten miles west of Thompson Falls Montana. Eichert and his father Frank 57 of White Pine were killed. Ray Meadows of Belknap the truck driver injured. Grace and other family members survive. Highway toll rises to 191 this year.

Two young Butte residents, Dan Lazzari aged 2 and Jong Bogensburger aged 5, were injured in separate pedestrian mishaps on Tuesday. Both sustained cuts and bruises but were listed in good condition at St. James Community Hospital.
