Governor Roosevelt breaks two year silence on prohibition and backs a federal statute granting states power to regulate intoxicants. He stresses prohibition must not allow the old saloon to return and urges Democratic leaders to address the issue at Syracuse convention.
Steve Kope a 27 year old North Dakota resident held in Butte awaiting questions on the Steve Choliaga murder may be released soon after a private medical examination. The county attorney gave few details but said the test assessed Kope’s nervous condition. Kope has been in the county jail for three weeks awaiting developments.
Provisional President Uriburu solidifies control after a coup that toppled Hipolito Irigoyen. Civil unrest subsides as arrests of leading statesmen continue and Uribru sentiment prevails, with no new gunfire reported in the capital.
A coroner's inquest found an unidentified man, about 50, died from a broken neck and fractured skull likely from a fight. Found in a doorway on 555 South Arizona Street early Sept 1, he was not identified after 10 days in a mortuary, as police trace a mysterious call and search for his killer.
The Associated Press reports Huey P. Long defeated incumbent Joseph E. Ransdell in Louisiana as part of a shift in Southern Democratic senatorial seats. Across Georgia and Michigan similar primary contests shaped the November general elections, with Byrnes and Slaton contesting in Georgia and Coleman L. Blease replaced by Long’s victory cited as the Louisiana result.
In Warsaw crowds protest as Marshal Joseph Pilsudski, prime minister and war minister, arrests former Premier Witos and 17 deputies. The coup targets the opposition ahead of November 16 elections, risking paralysis of their Sejm faction.
Weather forecast for Montana calls for showers on Thursday with cooler temperatures in the eastern portion and unsettled conditions expected Friday.

Mayor Beadle ordered a citywide drive against unlicensed auto drivers after the city treasurer reported sharply reduced driving permit applications this year. With only about half of county auto owners listed and 7 700 permits issued versus 11 000 last year, the administration argues that fee payers funding traffic enforcement deserve fairness against those who forgo permits. Police will target those who have neglected to obtain permits.
Sept 10 officers for the Montana Federation of Women's Clubs were nearly set with nominations for tomorrow's election. Only one post has a contest with nominees including Minnie Tennis of Butte for president, R E Brown Bozeman first vice president, J H Morrow Moore second vice president, Ted Woodward Fishtrap corresponding secretary, and C E Pew listed.
In Great Falls on Sept 10 the gasoline war lowered the price to 21 cents per gallon the cheapest in the state. Staley's Independent announced the cut after the People's Gasoline Company opened its station, triggering price drops among independents from 27 to 23 cents. Hundreds of motorists queued for the new low price before noon as Shell and Standard Oil kept their 24 1/2 cent wholesale level.
Second Lieut. W R Casey of Rockwell Field San Diego was killed near March Field when his aircraft collided with another. He bailed out at 600 feet but his parachute failed to deploy in time.

Shanghai dispatch reports that 400000 nationalist troops began a major push to crush the northern warlords in Henan. Forty divisions head toward Chengchow while forces move north from Hankow along the railroad. Heavy rains and floods slow western advance near Kweiteh.
Two men Pig Lockett and Holly White accused of stealing 45 dollars were lynched by a mob as police attempted to transport them for trial near DeKalb Mississippi. Officers pleaded for the men's lives but were powerless. no arrests reported.
Chicago launches a drive against racketeers led by Capone uniting police, business groups and labor bodies. The campaign targets extortion from unions and firms, with the grand jury, commerce association, labor federation and state's attorney backing the effort. Police Commissioner J A Alcock was reported to be involved.
Forsyth reports D. Pace race string owner and rider died at county hospital from injuries after the horse he rode at the Rosebud county fair races fell this afternoon. Two other riders James Donovan and Wootzle Westrope were slightly hurt as their horses piled on Pace. Westrope’s mount Jack Sharper is noted.
A Montana Automobile Association meeting urged Governor Erickson to call a special session to unlock 6 million dollars in federal aid for road construction. Warden of Great Falls and the Montana Highway Commission outlined legislative options to boost funds.
Bagdad Shriners will visit Chief Bob Gordon at Great Falls on October 4 with a special Great Northern train. About 200 to 250 members are expected to attend. The group also set a date for the annual ceremonial in late November, to be finalized by the Shrine executive committee.
The Silver Bow county Democratic Party accelerates activity ahead of the election. Unity confidence and energy drive efforts to mobilize workers and address what they call Hooverite causes of economic unease. All Democratic candidates are to meet tonight at party headquarters 119 North.
