A Warsaw radio broadcast described the city under heavy bombing and German onslaughts on the outskirts. The announcer vowed Warsaw would not surrender and appealed for Polish women to join the fight, with women supplying soldiers and food to sustain defense.
C. R. Fowler of Lewistown was elected president of the Montana State Association of Insurance Agents at the closing session at the Finlen hotel with Lewistown chosen to host the 1940 meeting. Peter Yegen of Billings was named vice president and Arnold Huppert of Livingston secretary. Noted speakers included John J. Holmes state auditor and insurance commissioner, John O Rourke, Bernard King, and Lou Boedeker.
Knights of Pythias from across Montana converge on Butte for the 54th annual Grand Domain convention. About 500 members are expected with a banquet in Meaderville to close the event Tuesday night. Registration at Finlen hotel and headquarters at the Knights castle on South Main. Richard H. Thomas and Mrs. Alice R. Black to preside at grand lodge sessions.
Helena Sept 9 Montana farms are producing better crops than average this year according to Jay G Diamond statistician for the Federal Agricultural Marketing Service. He noted that Montana country people are beginning to feel better after a decade of hardship as crops improve though details continue on page 8 column 4.
Russell L. Elson of the Pacific Northwest Credit association told the Montana Association of Credit Bureaus audience that denying credit for essentials can help neither the borrower nor the seller. He attended with E. DeWitt of Seattle as vice president of the Associated Bureaus of the Pacific Northwest. The gathering in Meaderville drew more than 60 attendees from Montana credit bureaus.
President Roosevelt issuing an executive order reorganized the White House staff into five divisions including the White House office Budget Bureau and National Resources Planning Board to improve handling of national emergency and normal government tasks. The plan aims to establish streamlined procedures for faster work flow and a more businesslike administration. The brain trust led by figures such as Thomas Corcoran and Benjamin Cohen is described as being out the window.
Berlin reports Field Marshal Hermann Goering told munitions workers that Britain cannot defeat Germany by military or economic means. He forecast Poland’s conquest within 14 days of fighting start, and said America remains Britain’s last potential ally though Germany does not need the United States. He spoke at Rhein Metall Borsig plant in Tegel as the speech was broadcast nationwide.
The forecast calls for generally fair skies in Montana on Sunday and Monday with warmer temperatures on Sunday. Local readings anticipate mild conditions to start the work week.
Paris dispatch says German planes and heavy artillery strike behind an artillery barrage as Reinforced German guards push across the Saar river in an effort to reclaim 200 square miles. French general staff notes a division led “a brilliant attack” securing an important section of territory amid growing scale of operations.
The London Evening Star reports that the German dirigible Graf Zeppelin was sabotaged and blown up at Friedrichshafen. Earlier Zurich dispatches noted an explosion and a glare in the sky toward Friedrichshafen on Monday.
From Bucharest on September 9, Edward W. Beattie recalls a Poland under invasion. The Polish army has yet to join battle. much of the army retreated in good order after losing territory and troops. The government moved among eastern posts near the Vistula, with Drexel Biddle traveling with it. Civilians face ongoing danger as the defense holds.
London reports that Britain rejects any German peace talks based on Nazi victory over Poland. Prime Minister Chamberlain vows to crush Nazism and supports Czech relief from foreign domination. Britain insists German forces must withdraw from Poland before any ceasefire talks. The stance aligns with France and other official sources amid Goering's pledge of an honorable peace.
Kiwanis International President Bennett O Knudson received a warm welcome at Butte airport as he pauses en route to the Pacific Northwest division convention in Victoria British Columbia. He spoke of growing Kiwanis activity at home and promised a possible return visit to Butte.
German forces advance toward Warsaw with reports of gains but Warsaw remained uncaptured. Germany reestablishes its eastern frontier by decree after sweeping toward Warsaw. In the west French troops push into German territory near Forbach, claiming about 200 square miles conquered as resistance continues along the front.
Judge Frank L. Riley, chairman of the Butte Boy Scout Court of Honor, reports this year’s advancements in rank and merit badges far exceed 1938 records, reaching about 111.45 percent of that total. The summary notes notable gains in the Boy Scout movement within the city and points to continued progress through the year.
J Bruce Kremer, longtime National Democratic committee figure and ally of President Roosevelt, says the United States faces little prospect of joining the European war. He notes broad opposition from both the national administration and the American public. Kremer arrived in Butte with Mrs Kremer and stays with his sister.
