Butte Public Schools See Enrollment Rise by 148
Butte School Dist 1 opened with 7 669 students across 16 elementary schools the junior high, Butte High and special classes an increase of 148 from opening day last year. Parochial transfers and new families boosted totals with 11 603 in district schools by week’s end. The Butte High enrollment rose to 2 003 up 23, junior high to 1 531 up 78, and Whittier led elementary gains with 583 pupils up 37.

Anaconda public schools report an enrollment of 2 511 this year up from 2 363 last year. All schools increased except Anaconda Senior High School which fell slightly to 566. The junior high with special education has 731 students and elementary schools total 1 214.

Lightning sets many forest range blazes in Montana
Dry lightning sparked a wave of fires across Montana range lands with 32 new blazes reported by U S Forest Service regional dispatcher Del Cox. Firefighters parachuted onto 11 fires with 58 smoke jumpers. planes dropped retardant on five fires near Unionville south of Helena. One blaze blackened 40 acres, including 30 on the Helena National Forest, possibly started by children. About 90 men were on the ground to control the outbreak.

William Meyer 83 Butte attorney dies after illness
William Meyer 83 a Butte attorney and civic leader died in a local hospital after several years of illness. He was born in Germany April 4 1883 and came to Butte as a child. He practiced law from 1903 and later formed Meyer and Meyer with his son Sig. He led Silver Bow County Democrats and spoke at many civic events including dedications of Butte High School in 1938 and the junior high in 1957.
