Soviet forces report heavy counteroffensive gains around Leningrad driving Germans from a vital highway and smashing air bases. A German submarine was captured in the Barents Sea as White Sea front fighting and air battles continued with high casualties on both sides.
General Mario Garcia Menocal former president of Cuba died Sunday in Havana at age 74. He led Cuba in a later era and his death marks the passing of a prominent historic figure in Cuban politics.

Butte welcomed several thousand sheep from Washington and Idaho at the new public stockyards on Sunday. The animals rested and fed between legs of their journey to eastern markets, with 21 car trains and careful pen separation to prevent mixups. Federal rules require rest en route and limits of 36 hours per trip.
Jack McFarland, 31, is jailed on auto theft charges after a ranch arrest near Glen late Saturday night. Sheriff Al McLeod said McFarland was picked up by George Scott of Missoula while Scott was driving from Dillon. McFarland rode with him to Butte and waited in the car in front of the Finlen hotel while Scott checked something inside.
British and German air forces traded heavy bombing and fighter actions across channel fronts. RAF raids on Boulogne and Hull ignited fires while German bombers struck southeast England northeast coast and Scotland and later sank some targets off Norway and the Dutch coast. Casualties were reported but damage varied, with pubs wrecked and several houses hit.

Mrs. Sara Delano Roosevelt, 86, mother of President Roosevelt, died Sunday at the Roosevelt home in Hyde Park New York after a circulatory collapse related to age. Her health declined last week and President Roosevelt traveled from Washington to visit his mother.
Hyde Park N Y Sept President Roosevelt’s major address scheduled for Monday night was postponed to 7 p m Thursday due to the death of his mother. The speech was to tackle new tensions in German American relations and would be carried from the White House by major networks and rebroadcast in 14 languages worldwide.
The statement notes the death of a prominent lady who remained active in charity and state affairs into old age. She spent the summer at Campobello Island, New Brunswick, leaving August 31 for Hyde Park, with the President and his wife at her bedside as she neared death.
Joseph H. Duff, 77, longtime Dillon resident and former Yellowstone park stage driver, died at his home on September 7. Born June 29, 1864, in Helena, he spent about half his life in Beaverhead County and earlier ranched in Centennial valley. Survived by wife Belle, sister Mayme White of Seattle, nephew Bert Duff of Butte, sister-in-law Nettie Duff, and niece Mrs. James Graham of Billings. Elks Lodge 1554 to conduct funeral services. The first snowfall of the season touched Butte Sunday with a light, hour long fall from 6:45 to 7:45 AM. Temperatures ranged from 36 to 44 degrees as rain interludes occurred later. Mountain areas reported white coverage and the mercury sank only slowly.
