In Vichy France three top prewar leaders Maurice Gamelin Edouard Daladier and Paul Reynaud were detained under administrative internment amid Petain regime prosecutions for France s defeat. Daladier told his son not to blame him as arrests extended to other ex ministers including Cot La Chambre Mandel and others charged or sought for state security plots.

House approves Burke-Wadsworth bill with 60 day delay provision

Washington dispatch reports the House passed the Burke-Wadsworth peace time draft bill 263 to 149 with a 60 day postponement of the actual draft to test voluntary enlistment. The measure would require men 21 to 44 to register while the Senate relaxed age limits to 21 to 30. The bill goes back to the Senate for concurrence as conferees seek to unify the two versions.

Democratic State Meeting Set for Saturday at Falls

The Democratic state convention will convene next Saturday in Great Falls. State Chairman Arthur Lamey of Havre issued the call, with County Chairman W. T. McCarthy receiving it. Delegates include all legislative candidates and hold-over state senators. The agenda covers adopting a platform and electing a state chairman, with Lamey presiding and naming a secretary. George Slim Franklin, exhausted and hungry after a two day flight through Ovando area marshes and hills, was captured near Greenough by Sheriff J F Shoblom and a small group after a tip from forest service smoke chaser Hubert Hunt. He admitted taking part in the Drummond service station robbery and the attendant kidnapping. He had two pistols, wore worn shoes, and was to be moved to Philipsburg for charges.

Rope kills boy in tragic fall

Twelve year old Bobby De Woody died in Denver after a rope looped around his neck when he fell from a tree and was jerked aloft. The accident occurred today as he swung from a limb, leading to his death shortly after.

23 Young Women to Start Nurses Training Thursday

Twenty three young women will begin a three year nurses training period tomorrow afternoon at St James hospital school. Fourteen are from Butte, two from Whitehall and one each from Philipsburg Boulder Missoula Whitefish Laurin Gladstone North Carolina and Buffalo. The class size matches previous years and will be smaller than next fall when hospital expansion begins.
