In Rio de Janeiro the captors of U S Ambassador C Burke Elbrick left a note that he is safe and will be freed once 15 political prisoners are delivered to Mexico. The prisoner exchange was near completion as 13 prisoners boarded a Brazilian air force C130 to Mexico with two more to follow, and Elbrick wrote to his wife that he is well and hopes for release. The abductors had warned of killing the envoy if the military junta refused the swap.

Other major contracts include an I-90 Cardwell to Junction 287 section at 3.73 million and Montana City overpasses at 2.91 million.

Physicians and surgeons from all 56 counties will stream into Butte for the Montana Medical Association’s 91st annual meeting. A three day program starts Wednesday at Finlen Hotel with registration and general sessions. Dr. Mark B. Listerud of Wolf Point heads the association. about 540 attendees are expected. Dr. Oscar A. Swenson of Kalispell will keynote and deliver the inaugural address at the banquet Thursday night. A golf tournament is slated Tuesday at the Butte Country Club under the Silver Bow County Medical Society sponsorship chaired by Dr. Frank A. Gardiner.

Fire devastates GN freight depot at 818 S Arizona
A blaze and explosion gutted half of the Great Northern Railway warehouse at 818 South Arizona Saturday night. The fire began in the rear wing amid oxygen tanks, prompting firemen to use caution as tanks could explode. Fire units from Butte fought the flames with heavy water streams, leaving the wooden structure heavily damaged but smoke and water damage spread through the building. Cause undetermined.
