About 3000 fans jammed the hot Dillon Jaycees rodeo arena for opening day with top circuit cowboys leading in six of eight events. Brownie Smith of Melrose drew strong applause for a fourth place barrel ride while 8 year old Debbie Barrett of Grant thrilled the crowd with an 18.8 second barrel run. Second day action returns Monday with 70 contestants chasing a share of 11750 in prize money. Gov. Tom Judge attended as a spectator.

Hijackers Win Safe Passage After Cyprus Release
Three Palestinian hijackers released 75 passengers and five crew members of a Dutch DC-9 in Larnaca gaining safe conduct from Greek Cypriot authorities. The freed hostages included two Americans and were taken to the airport terminal by bus. The hijackers plan to depart Cyprus for a country of their choice after negotiations led by Cypriot minister George Tombazos.

Patricia Gail Huntley of Wisdom was named Miss Dillon Jaycee Rodeo at Beaverhead County Fair. The 20 year old University of Montana student, sponsored by Dillon Livestock Market, will compete next year in Miss Rodeo Montana. First runner up was DeLyn Davis of Twin Bridges, 19, daughter of Van Davis, sponsored by local businesses. Second runner up was Luanne Ardison of Ennis, 17, Carroll College freshman, sponsored by Ennis establishments. Miss Rodeo Montana will be named Monday before the rodeo finale. Betty Schnell of Rogerson Idaho will marshal Dillon’s Labor Day parade at 10:30 a.m.
