Heavy Nazi bombardment across London's metropolitan area causes casualties and property damage as arial assaults extend to eight towns. Despite aviation resistance and anti aircraft fire, raids disrupt parliamentary proceedings and target Thames industrial sites near the Thames estuary.
Germany said torpedo boats and submarines damaged Britain's destroyer fleet as 50 former US ships bolster the Britain fleet. Berlin reported 18 civilian deaths in a northern German town and two killed in an air raid on Tiergarten. British air raids against Germany continued into Friday with alarms in Berlin.
John Burnett a 22 year old Drummond service station attendant was held hostage for nine and a half hours by two kidnap bandits and released near Sperry Grade west of Ovando. A large posse from Granite Powell Deer Lodge and Missoula counties pursued the fugitives through Ovando Helmville area and into rugged country after a $50 cash robbery.
In Bucharest on Sept 6 a throng of Iron Guardists surrounded the palace demanding King Carol abdicate and lauding General Ion Antonescu who has seized power. Troops clashed with demonstrators, firing into the crowd after fears of dispersal, with casualties reported and the situation escalating near the National Theater.
The Montana State College San Jose football game originally set for Sept 24 in Butte is rescheduled for Monday night Sept 23 to avoid clashing with Wendell Willkie's Butte visit. The Chamber of Commerce athletic committee sponsors the event at Butte high school stadium with tickets on sale tomorrow.

A masked robber, likely the same man who held up a Personal Finance office in the Metals Bank building last Friday, stole 265.50 from a Billings finance office last night. Police matched descriptions from the Butte case where 250 was taken. The bandit taped the victim’s hands and feet and used a pistol later believed to be a toy.
Federal Judge Charles N. Pray will address the annual meeting of the Y G Bee Line association at Glacier Park hotel on Monday. He will speak on Glacier Park’s thirteenth anniversary since opening.

Buster Ellsworth, son of a Helmville liquor store operator, says he fired a rifle shot that punctured a fleeing bandits’ maroon Chevrolet gas tank, forcing the abductors and hostage John Burnett to abandon the car and flee. Ellsworth, with two companions, pursued toward Drummond as authorities closed in on a cabin believed to be the robbers’ rendezvous.
Pierre Cot and Guy La Chambre, both former French air ministers, were ordered arrested by the Petain government as formal charges were filed in the war blame case before the supreme court. The move marks the first direct action of this nature since investigations into France's unpreparedness began.

County Treasurer George O'Brien reports 13,000 sets of automobile plates sold in 1940 with 2,120 truck plates, both records for this time of year.
