Butte Man FE Smyth Dead In Gallatin River Crash
The body of FE Smyth a prominent Butte businessman was found in the West Gallatin river about 30 miles from Bozeman. His car plunged over a 150-foot grade on a weekend trip leaving him dead. Smyth 46 years old was longtime resident of Butte and former manager of Walker's cafe. He served in the Navy during World War I and was active in Elks and American Legion. He leaves a wife four children and several relatives. The body was brought to Butte for burial with services pending.

Labor Day holiday auto deaths rise toward record toll
The Labor Day week end death toll climbed to at least 141 after the second day of a three day holiday. Auto accidents accounted for most fatalities with 111 killed in 32 states. Michigan led with 14 deaths and California followed with 19. Five deaths were from plane crashes and two Navy flyers died near Friendsville Maryland. Desperado Holds Two Police as Hostages Near Cincinnatus
