The Montana Railroad Commission refused Greyhound Corp. permission to discontinue the Great Falls to Butte bus service. The panel found no proven systemwide loss and noted the traveling public’s need for the route, including use by Boulder River School and Hospital students.
Public enrollment for 1968-69 slipped only 105 from the prior year, with total first-day attendance 7,870 across 17 elementary schools Butte High, the Junior High and Washington School special classes. Parochial losses added 269 district-wide. Davis expects some transfers and later increases as families return from vacations and post-strike employment shifts. Whittier led gains with 112 students, while Emerson Hawthorne and Harrison also rose on the south and east sides.
The New Reform party filed its slate of three candidates and presidential electors with the secretary of state in Helena. Dr. Mike Chessin of Missoula, the party chairman, and Joan M. Birch, secretary of the convention, delivered the documents to the Capitol. Party officials expect certification to be granted shortly and gubernatorial candidate Wayne Montgomery anticipated public disclosure after a Thursday meeting in Helena.
McNally of Montana extended his hitting streak to eleven straight games by homering to defeat the Yankees. The victory highlighted his strong power and consistency at the plate.
Republican Richard M. Nixon drew a vast downtown crowd in Chicago during his presidential campaign launch. He appeared in an unscripted hour long Q and A with seven citizens in the same studio as the 1960 debates, after a triumphant parade and private talks with Illinois Republicans. Nixon praised the reception as the greatest he had ever received. Police reported solid crowds along the two mile motorcade route as supporters reached toward his open car.
Saboteurs set off three bombs at a Tel Aviv bus terminal wounding 49 and killing one. Rioting erupted in nearby Jaffa as Jewish and Arab residents clashed, marking Israel’s worst city sabotage in a decade. The army reported daytime clashes with Jordanian forces near Kfar Ruppin and Beit Yosef, with fire and mortars exchanged at Neve and Yardena settlements.
Apollo 7 and Saturn 1B completed a countdown drill at Cape Kennedy amid minor issues. Commander Walter Schirra reported smooth progress as a transformer smoked briefly but caused no fire or delay. The test followed the fatal Apollo 1 blaze nineteen months earlier and included ready rescue crews on standby.
City and county officials reject all bids for the proposed swimming pool and plan a rebid. The swimming pool committee recommended breaking the project into parts such as electrical work excavation and plumbing to avoid general contracting and subletting. The lowest bid on August 28 was 376673 from Knuckey Construction Co of Butte while the next bid was 394194 from Taylor McDonnell Construction of Butte. Alderman Phillip Paull rued lack of local resident attendance for questions or comments.
Thomas Joseph Holland, 2, fell into Warm Springs Creek west of Anaconda while playing near the family yard. Coroner says drowning. Survived by parents Harry and Sandra Holland and brother James Anthony. services pending.
Mrs. Robert Mellhattan 32, a Missoula native and MSU Bozeman graduate, fell from a hay loft at the family Florence ranch while searching for kittens. A former Florence resident, she was known as vocalist June Long.

A Bulair Ilyushin 18 on a Dresdent East Germany to Burgos Bulgaria charter flight crashed near Burgos in bad weather killing 50 of 89 aboard. A government commission was appointed to investigate as unconfirmed reports said most passengers were East German tourists bound for the Black Sea coast.

Gaylord Nelson proposes a federal commission to craft a new method for choosing presidential nominees, favoring a national preferential primary or a reformed convention system with fair delegate selection. He argues conventions are antiquated and undemocratic amid calls for sweeping reforms by McGovern Mansfield and Ford.
