Traffic deaths surged toward a new summer record with more than seven deaths per hour. The National Safety Council cited 360 highway fatalities by 7 p.m. EDT and warned final toll could top all estimates if the rate continued.
Rural schools in Rocker Ramsay Divide and Melrose start Tuesday while Butte District 1 opens Wednesday with all elementary and high schools in session by 8 30 a m The district schedules orientation for new students and first graders Tuesday including meetings for principals and teachers Then all Butte public schools reopen Wednesday with programs arranged at Butte High and junior high under Superintendent Charles Davis and Principal Forrest Wilson
Tropical storm Greta developed in the warm Atlantic, increasing winds from 45 to 55 mph and gusts to gale force 100 miles from its center. The storm moved northwest at 14 mph and could become a hurricane as it curves northward toward Antigua and Puerto Rico.
Butte residents and visitors will view a fireworks show Monday night at 8 45 at Columbia Gardens. The Gardens management organized the finale to a successful season in the Playgrounds of the Rockies with Frank Panisko in charge and Ted Beech coordinating. Detonations will peak around 3 000 feet as rides and concessions close after the display. Heavy traffic is expected at the garden site at the foot of the Rockies just east of Butte.

A 10 year old Wendy Robbins of Simms was killed in a car pedestrian crash Sunday evening on Highway 20 one mile west of Simms. Irwin H. Johnson of Great Falls drove the car. no charges were filed. The death marked Montana’s first Labor Day fatality and lifted the weekend toll to 189.
A series of strong earthquakes struck Bogota Colombia killing at least eight people and injuring four others. Police said the tremors were the most severe in 20 years and seismologists warned of possible aftershocks.
