Authorities probe a savage knife slaying at the Super Save grocery. James Arrotta 43 and Lois 36 were found gagged bound and stabbed with a foot long knife. Robbers likely forced them from home as seven children slept. fingerprints and missing cash and coin collection noted.
Bonn Germany AP Chancellor Ludwig Erhard faces domestic political trouble after inviting Soviet Premier Khrushchev for talks in Bonn. Khrushchev agreed and may visit this winter, risking criticism if no progress on Berlin or reunification is made. Opposition fears hinder Erhard’s bid for a parliamentary majority in 1960.
In Santiago, Senduardo Frei of the Christian Democrats secured a sweeping victory over Salvador Allende. Frei led with 291,117 votes to 189,498 as Allende conceded. Riots were avoided with police present while Allende urged calm and vowed to continue the struggle.
The National Safety Council warned the Labor Day weekend could bring 490 to 500 traffic fatalities and up to 4 billion miles driven as Americans take a three day holiday. Fatigue and speeding were noted as major factors in recent holiday deaths.
Rockhounds from across the United States Canada and Mexico converge on Butte for the Northwest Federation Mineral and Gem Show at the Civic Center. Henry Pope Montana Council president notes mineral collecting is a passion and guests expect 7 000 to 10 000 attendees over three days with 2 000 to 3 000 out of town visitors. The Beaverhead County Fair opens with blue skies and mild temperatures as livestock judging and exhibits begin at the Dillon fairgrounds. The Jaycee Labor Day Parade rolls Monday at 11 with over 40 entries, expected crowds exceeding 10 000 along Dillon's business district.
An all white jury in Danielsville Ga finds Ku Klux Klansmen Joseph Howard Sims and Cecil William Myers not guilty of the night rider killing of Lemuel Penn, a Washington educator. They stay jailed on federal civil rights charges and were expected to post 25000 bond to regain freedom.
Gov Tim Babcock announced Republican vice presidential candidate William E Miller will deliver a major campaign speech in Billings on Sept 22 in the evening and will stay overnight. Miller, a former GOP chairman, is set to visit Idaho Falls the next day.
The Rev E Brentwood Barker succeeds Rev Howard Y Williams as pastor of the United Congregational Church. He will lead his first service Sunday September 3 with church school at 10 30. Barker has 19 years in ministry and has helped build church structures in Idaho and Montana.

William Beery 78 of 2615 Bayard died in a local hospital Friday after a brief illness. Born September 14 1885 in Ohio he later moved to Butte in 1914 and opened the Auto Electric Equipment Co after working for the telephone company.
