Sudeten German party deputy George Wollner told Czechoslovaks Hitler wishes to avoid war. His assurance to peace came amid tense talks with Prague and the British mediation mission led by Viscount Runciman.
In Alexandria on Sept 4, King Farouk narrowly avoided an assassination attempt during a swimming carnival. A police officer tackled the would be shooter, a 20 year old Syrian law student, after a revolver was fired and a bystander was slightly wounded. The weapon was recovered and the assassin denied ownership.
A violent cloudburst yesterday afternoon dumped heavy rain on Butte causing flooded streets and blocked drains. The 12 percent inch precipitation disrupted rail tracks near Silver Bow, sparked a shed fire at the Tombstone company, cut power in the country club district, and left Harrison avenue with most of the damage while three golfers narrowly escaped a lightning strike on the Municipal course. Local emergency crews responded to flooded drains and outages.
Eight people were injured and one man died in a late night collision near Harlowton. Serious injuries were reported for Mrs. Harold Tykeson and Mary Linn Tykeson of Helena and Betty Gunderson of Lewistown. other injured residents included William Vickerman Jr., Carolyn Snook, Carla Gunderson, Harold Tykeson, and Shirley Lou Tykeson. William Vickerman Jr. of Lewistown died from the head on crash caused by the two cars driven by Tykeson and Vickerman Jr.
A young pilot set a new air race record by circling a 10 mile course at 250.886 mph to win $12,000. Tony Seviere of Los Angeles won Grove race earlier, but Arthur C. Chester, a local, kept pushing amid tough odds as the event continued.
Adolf Hitler will enter Nurnberg for eight days of speeches at the Nazi party congress. Czechoslovakia is the focal issue with Austria in the background as the annual proscribed proclamation and several speeches are planned likely to surpass prior records.
Paris reports French war ministry measures to guard against any eventuality as German troops push into the Siegfried line opposite the Maginot barrier. Officials withheld full orders while officers and soldiers from northeastern garrisons are recalled to duty. Neary details given from Nancy and army HQ for the 20th district.
Great Falls news reports Walter Woehner aged 44 died after exposure to cyanide fumes while supervising fumigation at the school for the deaf and blind. He was owner of the Great Falls Drug company and died at the hospital. His father, a prominent banker, had died a week earlier from a cerebral hemorrhage. Mrs. Woehner and two brothers survive.
Cardinal Patrick J Hayes 70 head of New York's Archdiocese and noted church leader died in his sleep at a Dominican camp near here. He was found by his secretary Monsignor John J Casey after not appearing at his 8:30 mass. Death likely occurred late Saturday night or early today. the Pope was informed at Castel Gandolfo.
Montana State University alumni students and parents will gather for the first annual dinner at the Finlen hotel on Monday evening September 12. Notable speakers include Dr George Finlay Simmons university president Douglas Fessenden Grizzly mentor and Jiggs Dahlberg Missoula head basketball coach. Committees meet at the Y M C A Wednesday at 7 30 to finalize toastmaster and other details. About 200 alumni in Butte and 115 elsewhere are expected.
Cecil White, 17, was smothered to death when a truckload of peaches buried him and his mother and 12-year-old brother after a semi overturned near Lamar Colorado. The father, Claude White, dug to rescue but Cecil died before help arrived. Sheriff Elton Leighton said the driver fell asleep at Delta prior to the crash.
Montana forecast shows partly cloudy conditions Monday and Tuesday with showers in the Monday period and the east portion Tuesday. Cooler air moves into the southwest and north central areas Monday.
A Royal Air Force plane crashed into a densely populated London suburb, killing ten people including the pilot and injuring nineteen others, thirteen seriously. The craft struck a house and a boy in the street was among the dead as it nosedived over Edmondton.
Several thousand Butte union men and families attend Labor Day events at Columbia Gardens with an 11:30 a.m. sports program sponsored by Butte Miners Union No. 1. A 2:30 p.m. speaking program features Senator Wheeler, Senator Murray, and Congressman OConnell. Special buses run from 10 a.m. John Evans promises ample transport as residents depart city for the holiday. The Montana State Band performs and a dance closes the day at the Gardens pavilion.
Fourteen year old Mollie Calhoun of 1448 Dewey avenue reported thieves took a neighbor’s car from her garage Saturday night. Her wounded mixed breed collie watchdog, injured with severed tendons, may be seeking home as she pleads through the Standard for information.
President Roosevelt opened a southern Maryland political swing advocating a 3.35 million dollar bridge from Morgantown to Dahlgren as a national defense aid. He spoke near Laidlaw's Ferry with Representative David J. Lewis present to boost Lewis against Milard F. Ty dings, stressing defense and accessible borders along the seaboard.
Mrs. William R. Meeks, 55, returned home distraught and hungry after a 56 hour kidnapping ordeal in California. Justice Department agents hunt two men who demanded 15000 dollars as ransom. Bert Foster found her walking near Sheridan and brought her home. No ransom paid or notes received. District Attorney Loyd Hewitt spoke for the family and said she appeared unharmed.
The Associated Press reports at least 165 deaths as the Labor Day holiday weekend winds down. Autos caused 150 fatalities while a spate of unusual crashes killed several more including five in New Hampshire, five in North Carolina, four in Detroit, and multiple burn victims in California.
Rep. Wolverton of New Jersey on the TVA congressional probe criticized the seven week hearing in Knoxville. He said the investigation has been distinguished by what it has not done rather than by what it has done and failed to touch the more important questions.
