In Chile voters head to the polls to choose between two candidates for the Senate seat. The race centers on two prominent party figures and narrows the field to a decisive matchup shaping regional influence.
Chile heads to nationwide vote in a free election that could install Marxist Salvador Allende as the first avowed leftist president in Latin America. Christian Democrat Eduardo Frei competes as a strong alternative, with a third Radical candidate Julio Duran listed as a long shot.
Soviet Premier Khrushchev plans an unprecedented Bonn visit to meet West German Chancellor Erhard after the U S election. Officials say topics include Berlin, German reunification, and Western trade with the bloc amid Bonn hopes for greater influence in Eastern Europe.
BILLINGS AP two persons died and one injured when a school bus and a pickup truck collided head on on Highway east of Billings. The bus had no passengers and the driver escaped injury. The coroner said the victims were riding in the truck and their names would be released after relatives are notified.
A $350,000 alumni stadium project at the Montana School of Mines progresses with fall placement of 5,000 tons of sand base and 150,000 square feet of sod. Funds and materials come from donations via the Mines Alumni Association. The facility will seat over 6,000, include lights, a track, parking, and fencing with completion targeted for next year.
Robert Kennedy resigns as attorney general of the United States from the Johnson administration. President Johnson predicts he may seek a New York Senate seat, aiming to follow brothers John and Edward Kennedy toward the White House as he faces Republican Sen. Kenneth Keating. Barry Goldwater kicked off his Republican bid in Prescott Arizona vowing to end the draft while preserving peace efforts. He attacked President Johnson Humphrey and Stevenson urging a smaller federal government and a thriving economy. Miller joined him noting the war in South Vietnam would not end until a Republican wins the White House.
The Senate approved a plan to expand Health Care for the Aged alongside a Social Security increase of about 3 billion. The bill raises taxes by roughly 35 billion through 1985 to fund health care for roughly 18 million seniors and boosts monthly retirement checks by seven dollars.
Butte Local 375 AFL CIO members voted 126 yes 114 no from 334 eligible to approve a three year contract retroactive to July 1 1964 through July 1 1967 with Anaconda Co. Wage increases and fringe benefits are planned while details await formal signing. Union leadership and negotiators recommended approval.

Beaverhead County Fair and Rodeo starts in Dillon drawing thousands from southwestern Montana. Exhibits and open class livestock judging begin Friday morning with 4H and halter horse entries due by 10 am. Saturday features 4-H horse judging, livestock contests, a 1:30 horse show, fat stock sale at 7:30 pm, and rodeo events led by local FFA and 4-H participants.
Two Stake Construction Co workers Laurence Borgwardt and Loren Stumpf were killed by a contact between a phone wire and power lines while stringing a line for Range Telephone Co-op south of Miles City. Co worker James Hall reported a strong wind may have slackened the wire and caused the contact. The accident occurred near the Tongue River on the S H and Milliron ranches.
Daylight Saving Time ends in Butte and Anaconda at midnight Monday Sept 7. Residents will set clocks back one hour joining Mountain Standard Time. Anaconda Co mines switch to MST at 7 am Sept 8 with DST 7 am becomes 6 am. All mines close Sept 6 and Sept 7 except Clyde E Weed Concentrator, which runs to 8 am Labor Day and closes until 8 am Sept 8 MST.
North west Federation Mineral and Gem Show led by Herbert A. Wendel targets 2500 to 3000 visitors from Montana and nearby states. The Montana Council of Mineral and Gem Clubs sponsors the event at the Civic Center with cameo carving, silversmithing and faceting demonstrations and a nominal admission fee. Hours are 9 am to 10 pm Saturday and Sunday and 10 am to 4 pm Monday.
