Alder Man Wins Medal of Honor for Cassino Hill Charge
Pfc. Leo J. Powers from Alder Montana earned the Congressional Medal of Honor for single handedly silencing three enemy machine guns at Cassino. Using four grenades he knocked out pill boxes, killed five Germans, wounded about 12, captured 4, and helped seize 13 more. Powers, 35, a sheep rancher before the war, was inspired by inexperienced replacements under heavy fire. His wife Jane Powers and sister Blanche live in Alder and Anslemo Nebraska respectively. Powers has been released from the Italian theater and returned to the United States.
