President Roosevelt and Governor Landon met at the Iowa statehouse to talk about the Kansas drought for forty minutes after a luncheon. They touched on immediate and long term needs but did not reach any decisions and Landon departed after the meeting.
State police seized a 67-year-old hermit named Joseph Kuehner, self-described anarchist, found in an isolated shack near Artist’s Lake with dynamite, home-made cartridges, guns, and a back-pack bomb. He faces 30 days detention for observation. He urged broad distrust of the government and named prominent persons though offered no direct threats to President Roosevelt.
Detectives hunted faint clues in the Ruth Muir case as they investigated the moonlit attack that killed the 48 year old Y W C A executive near La Jolla. A male masquerader, Jack Burge, 31, was questioned in Los Angeles as investigators weigh a possible female perpetrator.
Patrick Quinn a 67 year old stationary fireman in Boston chose jail over paying 63 cents in alleged 1934 income taxes. He said I’ll rot in jail before I’ll pay that money because I don’t owe it. The state claims he owes about 35 cents in interest.

United Spanish War Veterans elected Scott Leavitt of Montana commander in chief at the group’s thirty eighth national encampment in Saratoga Springs. Delegates set next meeting for August 21 to 26, 1937 in Columbus Ohio and Leavitt named Harry R Stevens of Great Falls Mont as assistant adjutant general.
Sheriff Valston detained two youths John Anderson and Eugene Vlasia suspected bike thieves after an x ray showed a diamond ring in a youth’s stomach. A sack of jewelry was found on Anderson as investigators sought the ring’s owner. The boys, thought to be from Seattle, aided inquiries along the coast.

The old bell weighing almost a ton in a 30 foot St. Lawrence church tower has weakened the structure after 20 years of service. An inspection warned heavy supports could fail. Installed in 1915 and shipped by McShane Bell company, it will be moved to a ground belfry on the back lot for future services.
