Governor Frank H. Cooney addressed a Roundup Labor Day program urging settlement of labor capital disputes before strikes. He cautioned not to judge right or wrong but urged sacrifices for national recovery while coal miners listened. Continued on Page 1.
The Roosevelt administration will ask Congress to pass a 500 million dollar tax bill in January to replace expiring levies returning that sum to the treasury. Treasury and Ways and Means experts study revenue options, with a possible general sales tax revived if endorsed by the administration. Roswell Magill and H L Parker lead the review midway through the year.
Doug Davis crashed and died during the Thompson Trophy race at Cleveland after warning of danger. Col Roscoe Turner won the race at 248.129 mph and took the $4,500 first prize as 125000 fans learned of the fatal wreck behind the grandstand.
In Meaderville last evening at 7 30 two occupants in the back seat suffered injuries when the car driven by Henry Mernin collided with a vehicle driven by Mrs Hazel Grant Bourquin county auditor. Mernin was arrested for reckless driving and turned over to county authorities. Flanick and Mufich were taken to St James hospital with injuries. Flanick with possible pelvic fracture and Mufich with a deep gash on the right cheek.
A man caused fire near Sawmill Creek in Nez Perce threatened a summer home colony. The 10 acre blaze, fanned by wind, sent embers to start spot fires while 30 firefighters led by R T Ferguson, Charles Joy, and W F Simons fought through the afternoon. By nightfall the main fire was controlled and six men remained on patrol. A separate Butte district fire near Camp Caroline consumed nearly an acre and was also blamed on carelessness but was under control by night. Hundreds of motorists saw the smoke as the blaze and winds hampered crews.
The forecast calls for fair conditions in Montana on Tuesday and Wednesday with cooler air in the west portion on Tuesday.
Agents of the alcohol tax unit in the treasury department arrested five men for nonpayment of the federal excise tax on illegally sold liquor. Two were taken in Butte and three in Dillon, with arraignments set before U S Commissioner George Howard. The suspects included Kenneth Riley and Dan Harrington in Butte and Frank Anangst, Joe Jenson, and John Doe in Dillon.
A truck backed into a metal pipe connection at the Swift & Company plant on 724 South Arizona Street yesterday afterno on, severing a line and releasing ammonia. Witnesses were moved to tears as the gas blinded workers. firefighters were summoned but the leak was stopped before arrival and damage was minor.
A big crowd gathered at Columbia Gardens for a Labor Day event hosted by local labor organizations. The program featured sports from noon to 2 pm, band music, and speeches by U S Senator B K Wheeler and Congressman Joseph P Monaghan. Wheeler criticized the Roosevelt New Deal while praising aid to Europeans and Chinese, then left for Great Falls by air after his remarks.

London Sept 3 Evangeline Booth 69 eldest daughter of William Booth was elected head of the Salvation Army succeeding Gen Edward John Higgins. Booth defeated Commissioner Henry Mapp chief of staff who led the reform party. Booth has led the American branch for years.
State Senator James A. Noe, head of Huey Long's investigative committee, said Mayor T. Semmes Walmsley will be summoned to testify as hearings into New Orleans vice and corruption resume this week. He added all named individuals who allegedly received protection money will have their turn.
Eyewitness account from Cleveland reports Doug Davis driving the Thompson trophy race at high speed around pylons. The plane plunged after a miscalculated turn, killing Davis as onlookers described his nerve and daring.
Silver Bow Montana public relief offices move to the fourth floor of the county courthouse from the Chamber of Commerce building. Nearly all relief staff occupy the fourth floor while other county offices shift floors. Coroner Don Murphy and public administrator Mary Gavigan relocate to new quarters, with Mary Phillips returning to the first floor. The Butte Radio club is asked to vacate the fourth floor.
Philadelphia dispatch notes Herbert Hoover in the Saturday Evening Post condemning Roosevelt policies as economic regimentation and a usurpation of liberty. He argues the state treats man as a pawn and challenges the American concept of human rights. Continued on Page 2, Col. 2.
Dr. William F. Cogswell of Helena Montana was elected 1935 president of the western branch of the American Public Health Association at the 23rd national convention in Pasadena California. Dr Walter H Brown of Stanford University was installed as 1934 president. Cogswell heads the Montana state board of health and is well known in Butte.
An inquest will be held tomorrow evening into the death of Frank Sparling 68 of Jordan shot by Dan Holland at Miss Emma Pritchards ranch. Holland says self defense. Sparling survived by three sons a daughter and other relatives.
