The National Safety Council predicts 530 to 630 Americans will die in traffic accidents during the three day Labor Day weekend, marking the end of the summer holiday travel for many. The estimate reflects an educated guess for the holiday period.
The Associated Press reports Lt. Gov. Ted James and Montana Highway Patrol chief Alex Stephenson urged drivers to keep headlights on during Labor Day weekend to reduce crash risk. They cited a 1966 toll of 188 deaths with heavy traffic expected and pledged full patrol coverage, stating 93 officers are on traffic duty.
A 72-year-old Idaho fisherman, George A. Smith of Salmon, died of a heart attack after his boat overturned at Hap Hawkins Lake when companion Earl Stokes stood up. Smith clutched his chest and collapsed as his companions reached shore. the body was taken to Dillon.
At the Central Wisconsin Fair in Marshfield a hippo broke free during a wild animal show and dodged two patrolmen. Show officials lured the creature back with a baby elephant, noting the hippo had been raised with elephants since birth and now thinks it is an elephant.
Fresh North Vietnamese troops reported crossing into northern South Viet Nam to join Viet Cong efforts to disrupt the Sept. 11 elections. About 3,000 troops, including 1,500 new arrivals, mass near Hue with strikes planned to demoralize voters. Attacks killed 12 and wounded 10. U.S. pilots targeted rail lines. two planes and pilots were lost.
UAW President Walter P. Reuther told reporters in Washington that the auto industry is likely to raise car prices citing new safety features. He urged Senator Abraham Ribicoff to open an inquiry within weeks, arguing industry costs are being used to justify unwarranted increases.

Revin a 34 year old third secretary at the Soviet Embassy after he attempted to obtain classified U S space program data from an American scientist for large sums of money The FBI had thwarted the attempts and no arrest or details were provided The case spans contacts from 1961 to 1965 including payments exceeding 5000 dollars and involved a Washington scientist and the space program at Moon project level.
Patrolman Bob Moravek witnesses a convertible crash into a house after a high speed run estimated over 100 mph. The vehicle and driver were detained as investigators reviewed the wreck and possible injuries.
The International Union of Mine Mill and Smelter Workers with 50 000 members in the U S and Canada eyes a merger with the United Steelworkers of America which has about 1 1 million members The two unions signed a mutual aid and no raiding pact on August 26 in Denver formal merger talks continue with plans for action within months Butte local 1 has 2400 members and is the West s oldest mining union The Steelworkers local 6002 in Anaconda Butte noted merger talks but issued no statement The Mine Mill convention is not booked until August next year while the Steelworkers convention is set for September The Justice Dept file note suggests new developments on the merger story.
Butte and Anaconda will not switch back to Mountain Standard Time during the Labor Day weekend and will stay on Daylight Time until midnight Sunday, Oct. 30. County areas outside city limits follow the same schedule for convenience. schools open on fast time.
The U S Commerce Department reports Montana personal income rose in 1965 by 183 to an average of 2438 while still below the national average of 2746. Western states show gains, with Nevada California Alaska Washington Hawaii and Oregon exceeding the average and Montana and Idaho below. Montana total personal income reached 1.7 billion with sector breakdowns including manufacturing 135 million wholesale and retail 181 million transportation 118 million services 99 million and government 274 million.
France and Cambodia issued a communique demanding all foreign troops exit Vietnam to prevent internationalization of the war. De Gaulle and Sihanouk signed the statement urging an end to hostilities and a renewed observance of the 1954 Geneva accords by all powers involved.
