British air force says American built fortress bombers bombed the German port of Bremen in the dawn to dusk offensive amid a three day spree against Nazi shipping. Beauforts hit a Norwegian coast convoy vessel with two torpedoes and damaged an escort ship. one Beaufort is missing.
Washington in September reports the Senate finance committee approved a landmark revenue bill worth 3.6724 billion dollars. Senator Bailey called it the worst tax bill in history as it tightens exemptions and targets over 50 million people including 35 million car owners under a planned 5 dollar annual use tax. The measure aims for about 4.5 billion dollars yearly and moves to Senate debate the next day with no record vote.
An east bound trans Atlantic transport plane missing earlier was found wrecked in a remote western coastal district. All 10 aboard were killed including American naval officer Captain Sherwood Picking and Belgian Count Guy de Baillet Latour. Flight engineer Charles Spence also died. Other victims included Dr. Mark Benjamin and Dr. Robert Mowat. The plane had left North America Monday, likely from Canada or Newfoundland.
Police are intensively searching for suspects connected to multiple downtown break ins over Labor Day weekend. Robberies target Metals bank building area and several offices in Owsley Phoenix Rialto and West Galena structures. Major loss reported at Tom Liss beauty shop with about 40 dollars cash. Berlin reports claim bombardment of airports, trains, and motor convoys beyond Ukraine’s main river defense, with Leningrad ring tightening and a city near capture.
A P-39 Army pursuit plane crashed near Mitchell Field in Hempstead Long Island killing Casper Cucio age 5 Georgene Kramer 4 and Casper’s sister Pauline 7 who died later in hospital. Pilot Second Lieutenant Roy W Scott parachuted to safety but the blast burned witnesses and cut telephones and a water main.
Washington reports the new supply priorities and allocations board warns material shortages for defense require curtailing less essential industries. Mervin Gittins of Butte tied for high honors as an expert rifleman in the First Infantry at Fort Francis Warren Wyoming. He scored 184 out of 200 and earned formal medals trophies and an automatic pay raise. He outshot 2 279 competitors in the rifle range and stands among two others in his company to qualify as expert. Gittins is a member of company B First Infantry.
Milan's Popolo d Italia reports Mussolini and Hitler agreed on unifying Europe into one Axis dominated state after victory. A European flag with all nations colors is said to be unfurled beside Axis banners at head of Italo German armies. The plan reportedly includes Portugal and France within the new European state.
Five Soviet Russian officials departed in an Army transport plane for March Field after visiting the Consolidated Aircraft plant in San Diego. The group led by Maj. Gen. Poll K. Repin of the U S R arrived yesterday from Washington and was said to seek military aircraft. Consolidated officials expected the 47 Russians flying to the United States to come to San Diego.
London dispatch cites German radio claim that Allied raids in Germany killed 3853 and wounded 9445 since the war began, through August 29.
A U S built B-17 fortress bomber, battered and smoking, returned to Britain after a dogfight with German fighters over Brest, France. The air ministry described a high altitude strike on German ships, with crew casualties and continued enemy attacks as the bomber crossed the channel at a lower ceiling.
Tokyo reports say Premier Konoye is to consider a federation plan for a safety zone around the Japanese islands that could isolate Vladivostok from American shipments. The Asia Development federation warned of U S pressure on Japan and noted Roosevelt’s Labor Day speech sparked varied interpretations in Tokyo papers.
Americans started buying and borrowing under new Federal Reserve rules that limit down payments and require 18 month repayment. Officials report few complaints but say it is early to gauge public reaction to the measures aimed at curbing consumer demand and easing defense materiel pressure.
Montana State College will open for the 1941 42 year September 22 with Freshman week to assist new students. Classroom instruction begins Monday September 29. Freshmen must arrive by Monday morning and first day of Freshman week focuses on finding living accommodations. Upperclassmen will greet trains and buses and escort freshmen to campus.
