Rejected by relatives and nursing homes, eleven frail seniors end up in Jackson Memorial Hospital's emergency room in wheelchairs and stretchers. Administrators say money and care gaps force relatives to abandon or nursing homes to discharge patients who are not ill enough for admission but too sick to live alone.
Washington reports 83.5 million Americans employed, an all time high, while unemployment climbs from 5.5 to 6 percent. Ezra Solomon of the White House Council of Economic Advisors says the rise is not statistically significant and joblessness should ease. Lawrence F. O'Brien cites the rise as a campaign issue for McGovern versus Nixon in the election year. The headline notes a seasonal 100000 rise due to fewer teens leaving the labor force, with a drop of over 4.857 million jobs in the broader picture.

Northwest Airlines and the Air Line Pilots Association ended negotiations on Friday after the union issued an ultimatum. Northwest rejected the demand for immediate recall of all pilots on June 29, saying recalls must follow seniority and business needs.
Hugh Canavan, 40, racked up 232 parking tickets over two years in Philadelphia. Police arrested Sue Canavan, an artist, as authorities pursue $3,480 in fines from her husband.
