Reported figures say 846 bodies recovered by noon Sunday with an estimated 4,500 buried in villages surrounding Kakhak, as responders continue to assess the devastated region.
Soviet led forces crackdown in Bratislava amid Prague occupation and stalled withdrawal promises. Armored cars patrol, radio reports say officials and writers face pressure. officials deny mass exodus of intellectuals while city life slowly resumes after Sunday violence.
In Czechoslovakia the Liberal Presidium elected with Alexander Dubcek retained leadership as Soviet-led pressure intensified. Mass arrests in Bratislava and rumors of purges marked the crackdown on reformist movement while Britain offered visas to threatened Czechoslovaks. The party enlarged its Central Committee to 194, aiming to oust conservatives. the Congress, set for Sept. 9, was postponed.
Washington reports that the Soviet Union told the United States there is no truth to rumors it plans to invade Romania. The denial did not amount to a firm commitment not to occupy Romania, conveyed by Ambassador Dobrynin to Secretary Rusk after Johnson expressed concern.
The 12th annual Dillon Jaycee Rodeo opened with 5000 spectators including Gov. Tim Babcock at Beaverhead County Fairgrounds. A record 170 entries faced Canadian Reg Kesler stock, eight saddle bronc and bareback rides qualified, six of 16 riders beat the bulls. No major injuries aside from Kelly Barrett losing teeth after a bull kick. Linda Ruegsegger was named Miss Dillon Jaycee Rodeo and will enter Miss Rodeo Montana competition next year. Monday’s events include a Labor Day parade and arena show with Benny Reynolds and Shawn Davis chasing top money from an $8,000 purse and crowning Miss Rodeo Montana.
Natives fired arrows at the lodge mascot elk in Butte on Saturday night outside Elks Lodge 240. The elk was killed or seriously wounded in the incident prompting concern among members. A cash award of 250 dollars is offered in connection with the event.
Eight teenagers, four girls and four boys, died in a two car crash on Interstate 94 west of Jamestown after a farewell party for Army draftee Gary Carlson. Irene Greenshield, 16, survived in critical condition. the Greenshields and other victims were from Cleveland and Jamestown area farming families. Police noted few skid marks and uncertain cause as cars returned toward Cleveland from Jamestown.
Across the nation 323 people died in highway crashes since Friday 6 p.m. and 14 drowned while eight died in boating accidents. Locally a six month old baby William L Hansen Jr of Bellingham Wash was hospitalized with head injuries after a two car crash near Butte.
