In Nuremberg Adolf Hitler delivers a kultur address denouncing international pacifist democracy and asserting Aryan Nordic racial supremacy. He pledges national socialism to valorize blood and race, targets Jews as a ferment of decay, and asserts a future of elimination of Jewish influence in Germany.
Detroit reports indicate Henry Ford may reject the NRA automotive code and pursue a bold solo strategy possibly reviving the $5 a day wage. Associates offer few specifics but expect a Tuesday clarification while denying profit-sharing plans.
In Havana, Cuba, a hurricane swept the north coast with 100 mph winds. Five looters of storm-damaged property were shot by soldiers. One storm death in Havana and reports of deaths in Santa Clara and Cama guey emerged as the city faced flooding, power outages, and widespread destruction.
The American Federation of Labor reports a five billion dollar rise in purchasing power as September opens boosting retail sales by about 17 percent. The NRA drive expands with codes for coal and retail awaiting Roosevelt signatures next week while 2,033,000 workers returned to jobs between March and July. Johnson plans a Labor Day speech in Chicago. Henry Ford remains noncommittal to the auto code.
Helena reports the first grub stake agreement in two decades was filed by John F. Frazier of Helena for $40 and other consideration from J. A. Strawbridge of Portland. Executed August 29 1933 in Portland and received by A. J. Duncan, county recorder, it assigns Frazier to develop the Pathfinder claim in a joint gold quest.
President Roosevelt on a weekend yacht cruise weighs disarmament and regards Germany under Hitler as the key to the arms problem. The United Press obtained an authoritative outline of his views for the public, coming amid recent German leader Adolf Hitler statements.
President Roosevelt views the new Germany under Chancellor Hitler as central to world disarmament efforts. He believes Berlin must embrace the MacDonald plan for an international inspection commission. Norman Davis aims to push Hitler toward agreement. France, Britain, Italy likely to join. Russia expected to follow.
About 75 head of cattle on a 200 foot bluff above the Big Horn river near Hardin Montana were killed when ground caved in. Four men including C A Randall Big Horn county surveyor witnessed the cave in. Cattle belonged to E L Dana Livestock company. Heavy rains likely weakened the bluff.
Helena September 1. A prepared list of water conservation and flood control projects for Montana public works was discussed by federal and state officials. The conference included Senator J E Erckson Congressman Joseph P Monaghan Governor Frank H Cooney and Mississippi valley water conservation commission members.
The American Bar Association ends its business session warning the legal profession must ready itself for potential permanent changes to the judicial system if government emergency programs persist. Lous G. Caldwell of Washington delivered the report, noting differing views from Homer S. Cummings and Hugh S. Johnson on the temporary nature of recovery measures. Earl W. Evans of Wichita was elected president to lead the association next year.
The Montana forecast calls for fair conditions on Saturday and Sunday with little change in temperature. No precipitation is expected and temperatures remain near seasonal norms across the state.
In Los Angeles on September 1, Martin Bodker of Tacoma Washington a dairyman who believes wireless waves bother his nervous system jabbed his wire wrapped cane into a pail of water and listened to a broadcast. He has traveled the West seeking relief from nervous and muscular disorders aggravated by wireless sets.
Great Falls Sept 1 Mrs J J Laraway of Great Falls was elected president of the Montana League of Women Voters at the close of a two day meeting Also chosen were Mrs Milo Larock Deer Lodge first vice president Mrs L M Burdick Billings second vice president Miss Kate Hayes Great Falls secretary and Mrs M C Lydick Helena treasurer.
George W. Grebe of Kuna, president of the federal irrigation congress, urged reclamation district members in nine western states not to seek further extensions of moratoriums on payments or project construction costs.
A three ton log rolled down a mountainside at Gem Idaho injuring Mrs J W Wilbur who was seated on a porch as the structure was demolished and twenty feet of railroad track was torn away in the incident near Wallace on Sept 1.
Kansas City reports federal grand jury indicts TM Harvey Bailey and ten others for the June 17 machine gun slaying of four officers and their prisoner in Union Station plaza.
A Society for the Advancement of Better Living declares soup is eaten, not drunk or quaffed, in a formal decision made in New York on September 1.
In Kansas City the revolt of the Young Democratic Clubs of America against elder leaders escalated as delegates expelled John N Holdsworth for forged Alaska credentials. The movement demanded self-rule, scrapped the national committee program, and vowed to run their own affairs. Leaders warned of vigilante moves against those who opposed them.
Old Scarface, former king of Yellowstone park grizzlies, was trapped and killed in Boulder River country south of Big Timber after a reign of terror. The 800 to 1,000 pound silver-tip bear had entered 19 cabins and wrecked several, breaking steel traps and raiding cellars in recent weeks.
C F Kelley president of the Anaconda Copper Mining company arrived in Butte from Swan Lake with Mrs Kelley and guests Colonel and Mrs J O Malley Davies of London. He will spend a few days on business connected with Anaconda company. The party traveled from the Flathead region via Great Falls and Helena and reached Butte Thursday night.
With Butte businesses and public offices closed for Labor Day, many residents depart by train or car for two or three day trips. The Silver Bow Trades and Labor council and other groups plan Columbia Gardens events Monday featuring addresses by Senator B. K. Wheeler and Congressman Joseph P. Monaghan. An athletic program, Montana State band concert, and a pavilion dance are on the agenda alongside regional rodeos, park visits, camping, fishing, and special rail fares. Wild west shows are planned in nearby towns and parks while Missoula marks a fiftieth anniversary.
