First Day Enrollment At Mining City Parochial Schools

Enrollment figures for the first day show St. Ann leading parochial totals with 705 pupils up 15 from 1963. Holy Savior and Sacred Heart posted gains while St. Joseph and St. John decreased. Butte Housewife Charged With Manslaughter in Shooting

Joan Mickelberry, 41, of Butte, charged in District Court with manslaughter for the Saturday shooting death of her husband Gordon Mickelberry, 37, a miner. Bond set at 4000. defense counsel appointed. additional proceedings postponed to allow counsel contact. The shooting occurred after a family quarrel at 912 Lexington.

California is named the No 1 state in population by the Census Bureau in its July 1 estimates. The state shows about 18 084 000 residents, ahead of New York at 17 915 000, but New York holds civilian population leadership with 17 870 000. The gap reflects armed forces in each state.

Johnson signs permanent food stamp program into law

President Johnson signed a law extending the food stamp program to improve diets of the poor. MSU student detained by East Berlin police during Europe trip

MSU law student Joe Reber of Helena was arrested and held for about one and a half hours by East Berlin police while visiting the city. He described being driven to police headquarters, searched, guarded, and forbidden to smoke, with his camera seized and fears of being labeled a spy for the photos he took near the Berlin Wall. The incident ended with his release after questioning and observation, noting tense moments and guarded authorities.

Burglar Steals 60 Jackets and 40 Shirts from Car

Police hunt for a medium sized man after burglars broke into Philip Goldberg’s car in the Finien H te Garage. Missing are 60 sports jackets valued at about 600 dollars and 40 sports shirts worth 300 dollars. Thief allegedly could have taken up a salesmen role and left a customer list.
