Rate of Fatalities For Holiday Exceeds Estimates

The National Safety Council warned that holiday traffic deaths were mounting as Labor Day weekend entered its second day. Bright weather drew millions to crowded roadways for the last summer holiday, with pre holiday NSC estimates around 420 deaths expected in traffic across the 78 hour period.

Red China expels American youth amid passport dispute

An American student refused to surrender his passport and was deported from Peiping. Shelby Tucker and 41 other U.S. companions faced warnings as Peiping Radio lamented his noncompliance with foreign regulations. Tucker said Chinese authorities were legally correct and that he was misled by delegates or organizers.

The 11th annual Butte 4 H and FFA livestock show at Montana Live-Stock Co. yards set for September 12 13 and 14 expects record entries in fat beef fat lambs fat swine breeding stock and dairy classes. James B Glover chair says after premium awards committee review the list should top all Montana 4 H and FFA entries. Grand champion selections will follow judging across fat beef sheep and hogs with Daylight Saving Time used for events.

Soil Conservation Set Up Changed

Washington expects more farmers to join the soil bank program by widening participation in the 1958 conservation reserve changes. Acting Secretary Marvil L. Charles Davis Butte High School principal announced a change in registration for new students to aid opening day class organization. New students not previously registered should report at 2 45 Wednesday in Room 115, while those north of the railroad track must attend 8 30 Wednesday. An alphabetical list will be posted for advisers. faculty will assist. Hazing is replaced by a welcome mat program.

Young climber rescued after 700 foot fall on Palisade Mountain

Gary Werner a 19 year old Colorado State University student from Holyoke Colo was rescued from a rocky ledge near the summit of Palisade Mountain 8158 feet after slipping down an 80 degree incline and skidding 50 feet. Eight National Park Service rangers and two locals led the search with assistance from Ranger Bob Fran son. Werner was taken by stretcher to Drake then Loveland hospital in good condition aside from a possible fractured ankle and bruises.

Atomic test drills stage mock assault at Nevada site

At the Atomic Test Site in Nevada, 700 infantrymen including Canada’s Queen’s Own Rifles staged a mock invasion after a bomb blast equal to 40,000 tons of TNT. Butte Woman Joins God’s Navy On Pacific Mission Cruise

Donna Lee George of Butte, a Western Montana State College of Education student, joined over 100 youths on a two month Marine Medical Mission cruise. The group uses four ships two seaplanes and a land plane to move Bible teachers a doctor and a dentist to remote villages in Washington British Columbia and Alaska. The mission also runs a dormitory ship for camping trips. George plans to return to school and then resume missionary work full time.

Five Republican Senators Criticize Democratic Session

Five Airmen Dead as Globemaster Crashes Near El Paso

A four engine C124 Globemaster of the 1st Strategic Squadron crashed in heavy rain two miles northeast of El Paso International Airport at 1 45 a m killing five airmen and injuring ten others. The plane returning from Hunter AFB Savannah was using instrument landing facilities when the fire broke out. A board of inquiry was ordered to determine the cause.

No Trace Found Of Two Convicts

Granite County Sheriff Fritz Lueck reports no trace of Hugh Allen and Herman Cardinal after they overpowered guard George Morris, handcuffed him, and fled in a prison car near Maxville. The search spans multiple states and the Anaconda-Philipsburg corridor with authorities fearing flight out of state. Morris says the escapees spared him on the return journey.

Four teen crew rescued from sinking Tuna Clipper Sun Down

Four teen crewmen were picked up by Coast Guard units from the Tuna Clipper Sun Down shortly before it sank off the Baja California coast south of San Diego. The incident was reported by the U S Coast Guard.

Chavez Collapses in NYC Heat Causes Hospital Medical Watch

Senator Chavez of New Mexico collapsed on a Friday in 91 degree heat while returning home after a taxi broke down. He was taken from a downtown hospital to Bethesda Naval Hospital for several days of observation. The 69 year old legislator was reported resting comfortably Saturday night.
