Sheriff William Dalling said a 23-year-old man Kenneth McClintock of 501 N Jackson is being held in the county jail for investigation after Vernon H. Beutow, 28, of 111 W Platinum, was struck near Meaderville and died at St. James Hospital. Beutow’s companions and driver Dean Hoffman provided the initial account. autopsy ordered.

Boy Rescued After Six Hours in Narrow Well
Denver authorities rescued Rush Ray a 3 year old boy from a 12 foot deep dry well after six hours. Neighbors spotted him under a house and Rollie Martin freed him from the one foot wide shaft with police and fire support. First Labor Day Fatalities Reported Nationwide
Early reports for the three day Labor Day weekend show eight deaths from traffic crashes and other causes. The first fatality was Deborah Johnson a 3 year old from Ohio who ran into a car near Ashtabula. Missouri New Mexico North Carolina and Georgia also reported fatalities. Air Force B50 crashes on Susitna River island
ANCHORAGE Alaska an Air Force weather observation B50 four engine plane with 11 aboard crashed on a sandy island in the Susitna River about 50 miles northwest of Anchorage. Nine hours after the crash nine were reported dead and all 11 are believed dead. An Air Force rescue team reached the site and wreckage was scattered with parts burning. The plane belonged to the 58th Weather Reconnaissance Squadron based at Eielson Air Force Base near Fairbanks and operated flights over the North Pole Aleutians and Bering Sea.
