Nazi air force escalates raids on London and southeast England restricting daily life. Saturday saw 63 German planes destroyed with 22 British missing while Germans claim 124 British and 28 Nazis lost. Heaviest fighting around 6 p.m. as 300 bombers and fighters attacked. Polish and Canadian squadrons credited with actions.
President Roosevelt announced at the Hyde Park reception that Frank C. Walker, a New York lawyer and former Democratic national committee treasurer, will be the new postmaster general succeeding James A. Farley. He praised Farley and said Walker comes with broad experience of national affairs and communications.
A Pennsylvania Central Airlines transport crashed near Lovettsville Virginia during a thunderstorm, killing U. S. Senator Ernest Lundeen of Minnesota and 23 other people, including Justice Department and FBI officials. The DC bound flight carried passengers from Washington to Pittsburgh Akron Cleveland and Detroit. Witnesses described a bright flash and a fiery explosion as the plane plummeted into an alfalfa field.
Berlin reports Germany expects a final strike against Britain after three weeks of bombing. Nazi air power boasted of softening England and crushing the last resistance as commentators warned of a coming catastrophe. London faced renewed bombing as Hitler answered with heavy raids on air bases.
Washington critics say the Spurke Wadsworth military training bill will pass next week as debates begin. Key fights expected over age range for registration 21 to 44 or 21 to 30 and government power to seize industrial plants for defense. Republicans warn Senate plant conscription could trigger more opposition on final passage.
The New East Butte overpass, first phase of the Meaderville bypass on the Butte Helena highway, opened last night to traffic. Two overpasses and a bridge over Silver Bow Creek reduce dangerous railroad crossings and may extend to connect with highway 91, easing Meaderville congestion. Charles Shannon of Butte was a listed figure in the report.
In Bucharest Adolf Hitler promises protection with the German army as Romania demobilizes much of its 1.3 million strong force. Foreign Minister Mihail Manoilescu announces an absolute military guarantee for Romania, while Vienna’s settlement cedes Transylvania to Hungary. Germany and Italy push a largely axis guided policy as Romanian nationalists oppose losses to Hungary and call for independence from Czechoslovak borders.
Salvation Army Butte officers prepare a two day diamond jubilee celebration September 15 and 16 to honor the 75th anniversary of its founding and 60th anniversary in the United States. Visitors from Montana northern Wyoming and Utah are expected. Dignitaries include Lt Commissioner and Mrs Donald McMillan of San Francisco Lt Col and Mrs James Dee from Denver Major Arthur Brewer and Lt Col and Mrs R E Clark of Beattie. Captain G E Sather leads arrangements with his wife.
Butte will reopen 27 elementary and three high schools Tuesday for the 1940 41 term. Over 8 500 youngsters are expected to enroll in public and Catholic schools with about 4 000 in public elementary, 1 900 in public high, and more than 600 in Catholic high schools plus 2 000 in parochial grade schools. Rural schools also start Tuesday after summer repairs including modernization at Jefferson school. Continued on Page 8 Col 3.
Partly cloudy with light showers in Butte today and Monday, cooler today. Montana forecasts show partly cloudy skies today and Monday with scattered mountain showers tonight and cooler conditions in the west and east of the divide on Monday.
Word spread in Butte and across Montana that Frank C. Walker, a longtime Butte resident and former attorney, was named postmaster general in the Roosevelt cabinet. Born in Pennsylvania, he grew up in Butte, studied at Gonzaga and Notre Dame, and rose to deputy county attorney before entering national politics.
Butte joins the nation in marking Labor Day with a program at Columbia Gardens sponsored by the Silver Bow Trades and Labor council. Many employers will close for the holiday and postal and city county workers will have the day off, enabling trips to national parks.
The Montana recruiting district reports 259 enlistments in August, the highest monthly total in state history. Most new soldiers joined the signal corps, with 11 having prior service, and recruits were assigned to stations in Montana and overseas posts including Alaska, Hawaii, the Panama Canal Zone and the Philippines.
Pennsylvania Central Air Lines released the official passenger list for the Washington to Pittsburgh airliner that crashed near Lovettsville Virginia killing 25. The names include Senator Ernest Lundeen Dr Charles D Cole W M Burelson E Tarr Miss Turner Miss Post William Garbose from the Justice Department and several others with addresses in Washington Arlington Huddleston and Chevy Chase.
The Willkie for President club of Butte will open a headquarters at 15 West Broadway next week with a paid secretary daily. Organized about a week ago, it includes Republicans Democrats and independents and is not tied to party committees. Wendell Willkie will arrive in Butte from Spokane around 8:15 p m September 24, per a wire from Harold Gallagher.
RED LODGE Aug 31 Sheriff's officers recovered a new pickup truck used by burglars to haul $2,000 worth of cigarets from the Olcott Wholesale Grocery warehouse on August 13. The truck stolen from a local garage was found abandoned near the Wyoming state line about a mile from Warren. Fingerprints had been wiped from the truck.
Eighteen nurses from Butte Anaconda and Galen leave tomorrow for Billings to attend the Montana State Nurses association twenty eighth annual convention which begins Tuesday and ends Thursday The theme is Orthopedic Nursing Dr Louis A Allard of Billings will address the delegation including Mrs M Byrum Miss Ann Papich Miss Rita Wiggenstein and other local leaders Delegates from Butte include Laura Williamson Sister Joan Marie Sister Frances Edward Miss Mae Lowney and others Anaconda delegates are Miss Alice Shea Miss Margaret McCarvel and Miss Margaret McMahon Registration and voting cards will be required at Northern Hotel Tuesday morning and Commercial Club for sessions Officers of the state will be elected this year.
