In Tarrytown New York on August 31 a lampoon titled Nightmare of 1934 depicting President Roosevelt with a crown and Mrs Roosevelt was destroyed when an unnamed Russian arsonist threw naphtha onto the canvas. John Thompson 26 of New York was jailed six months for ruining the artwork at the Westchester Institute of Fine Arts. The piece showed the president at microphones with a fishing line and a large fish, a crown atop his head, while Mrs Roosevelt in an evening gown wore a paper crown as papers spill from her hand.
