Thousands of visitors are expected in Butte for the Fourth of July celebration. The parade forms at Granite and Main at 10 a.m. with a countermarch to the Civic Center and a Big Butte fireworks display at 10:30 p.m. Butte Celebrations Inc. leads the event with Sheriff William Dalling and Mayor Vern Griffith coordinating. Weather forecasters expect afternoon storms.

LaHood Wreck Hurts Two and Closes Highway 10
A semi truck loaded with produce left Highway 10 one mile east of LaHood Park at 2 a.m. injuring Willie Lee Davis and Vincent Benoit. Both LaMirada, California residents were treated at Silver Bow General Hospital and later released in fair condition. The crash halted traffic for about 18 hours while crews cleared the scene and removed the truck. Davis, driver, was freed after guards rails and embankment impact. Benoit remained trapped for over an hour. Davis listed Whittacker Produce Co. in Vernon, California, en route to Calgary.

John Curtis 78 Realtor Dies in Auto Crash
John H. Curtis 78 native of Butte and longtime Mining City realtor died of a heart attack while driving from a summer home on the old Cedar Mill road south of the 19 Mile on U S 10 East. He owned Curtis Realty Co. and lived at 331 S Washington. Funeral arrangements set for Thursday with a 9 am mass at St Patrick Church.

Old Glory 1776 to Be Displayed in Butte Home Window
A 1776 flag with 13 stars and stripes will be shown in Butte at 1217 W. Platinum when Arlo Axelson and his wife host Independence Day observances. The flag, owned by Mrs. Axelson’s father B. C. Parker of Bozeman, has remained in the Parker family since 1776 and is linked to Capt. Caleb Parker who carried it in the Revolutionary War under Col. Nathaniel Green. Parker is the great great grandfather of the Axelsons and of B. C. Parker, who is visiting Butte for the celebration.

Butte weather outlook shows cooler temperatures after 90 degree heat on Monday. Forecasters expect readings around 83 with partly cloudy skies and occasional showers as the Fourth of July approaches. Last year peaked at 91 on July 30 1960 while August high remained 88.

No Inquest Set in Butte Boy Death
Coroner Leonard Scott of Jefferson County announced no inquest will be held into the highway death of 10 year old Dave Martinez on the eve of his eleventh birthday. The boy, son of Mr and Mrs Dave Martinez of Walkerville, was struck by a car driven by Joseph F Schabarker of Great Falls after reportedly dashing into the road while traveling about 50 mph on U S during the Sunday incident.

Butte Woman Reaches Century Mark Reading Bible on Birthday
Mrs. Marietta Mahood, 101, a longtime Butte resident since 1951, celebrated her birthday at Summit Valley Sanitarium by reading the Bible and sharing cake with residents. She is mother to several Mahood descendants and was married in 1880 in Mankato Minnesota.

Homemade cracker explodes killing 13 year old in New Jersey

State Road Death Toll Now 134
Three more traffic fatalities pushed Montana holiday toll to nine and the year total to 134. Victims include 10 year old Dave Martinez of Walkerville 27 year old Franklin Delano Wolenetz of Bozeman and 21 year old David V Sharp of Spokane Washington. Sharp died after his car left a curve west of Harlowton following a police chase at speeds up to 110 mph. He was employed in Harlowton as a Milwaukee Road telegrapher for the summer.

Bozeman Man Killed After Car Hits Detour Sign North of Deer Lodge
Powell County reports a second traffic fatality in three days. Franklin Delano Wolenetz, 27, of Bozeman, died when his car struck a detour sign and plunged into an irrigation ditch near highway 10 just north of Deer Lodge. He was alone and died instantly. investigators say speed may have been a factor. The body was found by a Northwest Freight Lines driver and sent to Bozeman after notification of his parents.
