Bear spotted in Butte likely killed
Authorities believe a black bear hit by a vehicle Friday night was the same bear seen near Butte neighborhoods in recent days. Warden Coy Kline noted the strike occurred at the I 90 and I 15 interchange on Butte's east side near the Burlington Street Bridge.

Storm triggers car trouble in Butte area
Snow coated roads prompt more than a dozen wrecks in five hours in the Butte area. A police SUV was struck while responding to a crash on Colorado Street at about 8:40 a.m. No major injuries were reported. Montana troopers logged 24 crashes before 1 p.m., as jackknifed semis appeared on Homestake Pass.

DEQ workers displaced by lead dust at Armory building

Thieves strike Butte cars during weekend spree
Butte police report at least seven vehicle break ins over the weekend with items stolen including a Rossi 20 gauge shotgun, a snowboard, a mounted deer head, camouflage clothing and a backpack. Undersheriff George Skuletich noted many crimes appear unrelated and rise during holidays as valuables are left in cars. The incidents began Friday night with a purse theft in Star Lanes lot and continued Sunday in the 4601 Harrison Ave area with rear window smashing.

Snowy opener boosts Montana elk harvest outlook
Monday snow in southwest Montana hindered driving but aided big game hunting. Warden Shane Yaskus said snow would push elk toward winter ranges, boosting harvest in coming days. Rifle season runs to December 1. West-central region check stations logged 2,424 hunters with 98 elk, 18 mule deer and 55 white tailed deer harvested. Elk harvest fell 17 percent from last season and 16 percent below the five year average. mule deer harvest roughly half of last year.
