Ed DeGeorge leads Silver Bow County Commissioner race 11,808 to 5,169 with 38 of 43 precincts reporting. Voter turnout includes 24,304 registered and 19,930 casting ballots with 2,367 absentee ballots. McGovern carries local presidential votes 10,093 to 6,598. Olsen and Sheehy win key statewide contests.
Deer Lodge County voters favored Democrat candidates in national and state races with Arnold Olsen and Lee Metcalf leading. In local contests, Anaconda attorney Robert J. Boyd led incumbent Sid G. Stewart for the Third Judicial District judgeship with 1722 to 1069 votes as 8 of 20 precincts counted. The tally showed strong Democratic support across the ballot.
Democrat Thomas L. Judge, 38, defies bias to win Montana governor race over Ed Smith with about 60 percent of the vote. Judge led in Yellowstone County and Lewis and Clark while his running mate Bill Christiansen captured lieutenant governor. Final tallies show 53,938 votes for Judge and 36,732 for Smith across 256 of 983 precincts.
Senator George McGovern conceded defeat in Sioux Falls and pledged full backing to President Nixon. He praised supporters and said the effort will bear fruit for years, noting the country’s move toward peace and a lasting political process.
Attorney General Robert E. Woodahl moves ahead of Democrat John C. Sheehy with 50,282 to 48,896 as 268 of 983 precincts report. Incumbents Dolores Colburg and Hollis Connors widen margins in statewide races while Secretary of State Frank Murray holds his post.
In Gallatin County Tuesday W W Lessley led Thomas Sabo 6160 to 3395 for district judge with 17 of 32 precincts reporting. Other close races included Democrat Clifford Pasha ahead of Republican George Gillette for county commissioner and Dorothy Bradley with a 1000 vote edge for state House.
President Nixon led Montana with about 56 percent of the vote as returns rolled in, expanding a clear edge over Democrat George McGovern. The result followed Nixon’s long-standing Plains state success and included coattail effects in the Montana Senate race as local Republican Henry S. Hibbard challenged Sen. Lee Metcalf.
In Montana, Sen Lee Metcalf led Henry Hibbard 58 870 46 405 with 297 of 983 precincts reporting as the 1972 race narrows. Arnold Olsen trailed in western district, while John Melcher crushed Richard Forester in the eastern contest with 33 869 to 10 874 with 109 precincts.
AP reports 12 30 am results showing Nixon leading Nixon 93 113 and McGovern 65 939 in Pres race. Hibbard 74 456 trails Metcalf 87 465 for Senate. Smith 69 097 tops Gov. Melcher leads Olsen in the 2nd District.
With 2 of 16 precincts reporting Powell County expects over 80 percent turnout. One precinct reaches 90 percent and the other 81 percent. 3,475 registered voters. 170 ballots cast tie Neubauer and Smets at 85 for county commissioner. Judge Stewart leads Boyd 87 to 80 in district judge race.
