In Germany 11 miners, trapped two weeks after a reservoir dam burst flooded the Lengede iron mine, were carried to the surface in a torpedo shaped capsule. They were brought up 183 feet through a rescue shaft in 57 minutes and taken to hospital.
Sheriff W. L. Dalling stands before a garage in the 1200 block of East Second as authorities say four tons of dynamite were stored there. Seventy of 168 stolen cases exploded on August 24, killing Emil Guay. Four arrests were announced Thursday in the theft.
Four Butte men face burglary charges and one man is charged with receiving stolen property after the theft of about four tons of dynamite tied to a fatal blast at Pittsmont flag dump. Authorities say most of the 168 stolen cases are accounted for, with bonds set at 2500 dollars and arraignments scheduled.
A man and wife wanted in a Montana robbery were captured near Hartington Nebraska after a roadblock trap. Robert Sterling McVay 32 and Sharon McVay 20 were taken to Cedar County Jail. The couple arrived with Mrs Hansen the suspect’s mother in law whose farm is near Hartington. The arrest followed a Montana alert and a ruse about the McVays visiting their relative.
Senator Lee Metcalf calls for legislation to require agencies to publish in the Federal Register their organization, policies, and rules while keeping essential exemptions. He argues public access ensures accountability in how billions are spent and that records and votes in agency proceedings should be open.
Australian Senator Dorothy Tangney visits Butte Montana during a Montana tour. Mrs Clara Thomas testified that her brother blurted I must kill you too while she argued with him at night the body of rancher Frank Tschirgi was found with a .22 pistol and a 30.06 rifle near him at the ranch headquarters Her husband Robert and son David are charged with first degree murder in the March 10 death after she said she must have killed him but cannot recall firing a pistol.

In Denver a federal judge sentenced six International Union of Mine Mill and Smelter Workers officials to prison terms for conspiring to defraud the government by filing false non Communist affidavits between 195? and 1956 to qualify for National Labor Relations Board services. Albert Skinner of Aurora and five others received three year terms and $2000 fines each. bonds were continued pending appeals.
Senator Margaret Chase Smith of Maine signals serious consideration of entering the 1960 primary race as a potential first female president. Her aide notes she may offer New Hampshire voters a third option against Nelson Rockefeller and Barry Goldwater. She is 65, to turn 66 in December, and will speak December 5 to the Women’s National Press Club.
Mine-Mill Local 117 president Owen McNally and international rep George Kalafatich clash with Tom Hughes of the International Steelworkers Union over a court order placing a trust on the Anaconda smelter picnic fund. Hughes claims funds stay local. Mine-Mill says the fund is for all Anaconda smelter workers. The district court ruling favored Hughes and John Emmons, with emphasis that the fund remains intact and should benefit smelter workers locally.
