Olsen campaigns on Vietnam inflation and gun control while criticizing Olsen for pledges, saying voters reject standard promises. Smiley demands an apology after a clash over positions on Vietnam Johnson and tax policy. Smiley labeled as a liar in the heated exchange.
In Helena AP dispatch Republican incumbent Ernest Steel led Democratic challenger Henry H. Anderson by more than 3,000 votes as unofficial returns showed 38,559 to 35,327 with 272 of 1,037 precincts counted. Steel seeks a two year term after filling an unexpired term.
In a tense early tally Humphrey led Nixon by popular vote but was behind in electoral votes 152 to 147 with 270 needed to win. Wallace held 39 electoral votes from four states. State-by-state results showed shifts in Pennsylvania Illinois New York and ongoing House and Senate contests shaping the path to the presidency.
In Helena, Nixon holds 48 percent to Humphrey 46 with 342 precincts reporting 33 percent. Wallace trails with 5,819 votes as Nixon advances, narrowing Humphrey's early edge in the Republican candidate race.
By early today Lucille O Leary a Butte woman Republican appeared set to win a six year term on the board of county commissioners. Her victory would give Republicans control of the county board for the first time in memory as she led Democratic incumbent H J Tubie Johnson in a vigorous campaign.
Incomplete results from 40 precincts: 5 596 to 4 820 with strong Democratic backing beyond. Incumbent Republican commissioner Earl Holman and Democratic holdover Bob Sparks lead, while absentee ballots delayed full totals. Overall turnout likely around 86 percent despite snow and cold. Governor Forrest Anderson and Congressman Arnold Olsen led in the county, with Olsen needing Democratic votes from here and Anaconda to win. See O'Leary Page 2.
Variably cloudy conditions in Butte Anaconda today and tonight with highs near 38 and a low around 12. Chance of precipitation remains at 20 percent both today and tonight. One year ago the high was 46 and the low 11.
Deer Lodge County voters favored Democratic candidates by large margins on Tuesday with Sen. John Luke McKeon leading reelection. The swimming pool bond issue appeared to fail while Humphrey won the presidency and Olson, Anderson, Judge, Daly and Cannon led in several statewide races.
In Missoula a faulty rotation machine in mid morning caused a mismatch with four other units. Deputy clerk Mary Skalsky said voters who already cast ballots were asked by phone to return and re vote. More than 100 voters were recalled while officials tried to salvage votes.
Dillon voters in five precincts turnout near 90 percent with early GOP statewide tilt suggested by small precinct results. Babcock edges Anderson, Smiley leads Olsen, Nixon tops state forecasts as weather clears after morning snow.
Good weather pushed Deer Lodge turnout to 88 percent while Garrison reached 8 percent. Early unofficial returns show Humphrey with 21 votes to Nixon 19 and Olsen leading the congressional race 32 to Smiley 13. Anderson led 34 to Babcock 8 and Montgomery 3.
Paris reports say the first expanded Viet Nam peace talks were postponed because South Vietnam refuses to participate. North Viet Nam and the National Liberation Front reportedly urged proceeding without Saigon, but the United States rejected that proposal. American officials insist talks cannot proceed without Saigon presence.
Beaverhead County coroner's jury ruled that 17 year old Raymond Rebich died from an accidental rifle discharge on October 29. The 30-30 round went off while DeVon Childs held the weapon as the two Beverly County High School seniors were "goofing around." Funeral workers and the sheriff testified at the inquest.
Senator Eugene McCarthy of Minnesota, seeking the Democratic nomination, remained in his Washington office away from campaign bustle on election day after voting by absentee ballot.
