Helena faced a catastrophic earthquake collapse day with sub-zero winds. Hundreds of buildings toppled as residents fled to neighboring towns for shelter. The disaster, following weeks of shocks, raised death toll to six with two new fatalities reported.
Pope Pius favors granting Italy a mandate over Ethiopia to avert a larger world conflagration. He signals the Civilita Cattolica will publish an editorial on Saturday arguing Italy is entitled to a mandate by justice or necessity. The pope personally reviews proofs for the magazine. Helena Ontario reports its police department has relocated four times in under two weeks following an earthquake that damaged headquarters. The force now operates from a hotel bus in a vacant lot, with cramped space and minimal facilities while awaiting a permanent station. Nearby highways are aiding patrols as weather remains freezing.
Reports from the State Department indicate a large number of American shipments have gone to Italy this month despite administration efforts to discourage trade with belligerents. The exact volume is not disclosed but is described as sizable, following President Roosevelt and Secretary Hull’s push against such transactions after the Oct. 3 policy pronouncement.

A noon quake in Helena Montana adds two deaths and extensive injuries after a 19 second tremor. The city reports more than 33 million dollars in new property damage as aftershocks continue through the afternoon.
