Butte commemorates Memorial Day with services at the courthouse capstan and a grand parade down Granite Street. Speakers Revs John Fargher and Paul H Feldman urged maintaining freedom, with veterans groups, marching units, and local officials participating.
Butte residents were urged to rededicate themselves to the sacrifices of those who died for country. Rev. Paul H. Feldman spoke at Holy Cross Cemetery and Rev. John S. Fargher spoke at Mountain View Cemetery. Feldman framed patriotism as filial love magnified and tied to sacrifice for freedom.
The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies in Butte and nearby areas with afternoon showers or thunderstorms. East of Divide expects cooler air with highs 60 to 75 and a mix of showers. West of Divide sees little temperature change with highs 60 to 70 and possible evening showers.
Americans marked the holiday with parades and memorials even as highway deaths totaled at least 110 in the latest count, with the National Safety Council warning the toll could reach 120 in the 30 hours of travel. Traffic police tightened patrols and safety kits spread to motorists nationwide as crews reported multiple crashes including two fatal accidents in Michigan and Maryland. In Denver, Colorado, about 300,000 cheered astronaut Scott Carpenter and his wife during the Space Age celebration.
Sen. Harry F. Byrd cites a total of 1.2 trillion dollars in obligations for the coming year, including highway trust funds, Social Security, and loan programs. He calls for scrutiny of federal spending but notes a full Senate inquiry will be postponed due to other business. The House prepares hearings on raising the debt ceiling from 300 to 308 billion.
Ervin J. Mueller known as Cotton, longtime Butte engineer and head of Mueller Engineering Co. Inc., died after an extended illness. Survived by widow Evelyn Beausoleil and four daughters, mother, and numerous relatives. Funeral set for Saturday at St. Ann Church with burial Holy Cross Cemetery.
A report from the Office of Minerals and Exploration to Senators Mansfield and Metcalf shows federal grants totaling over 2 million dollars to Montana in the past decade for mineral prospecting. Grants matched private funds. nine Montana applications were pending. 63 contracts were through the Defense Minerals Exploration Administration.
Strategic materials costs rose in February to 8.743 billion dollars as 65 of 76 stockpile items exceed need. The surplus across minerals metals and other substances tops 3.4 billion with molybdenum alone 25.305 million pounds over target, valued at about 35.247 million. Senator Byrd notes barter of surplus agricultural products offset some declines while Sen Symington seeks 50 thousand more for its inquiry.
Dana Miller, 23, of 1226 Farrell, was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the lower leg after a gopher hunting accident Wednesday afternoon. Sheriff’s deputies were told Joe Comfort, 24, of 705 E. Galena was using a 22 caliber pistol when Comfort accidentally shot his companion. Miller was admitted to St. James Community Hospital.
Rodger Ward captures his second 500 mile title at Indianapolis driving a new roadster in 140.292 mph, breaking A J Foyt’s prior record. Len Sutton finishes second with Eddie Sachs third as Ward leads late and benefits from a final pit strategy.
The unofficial results list Rodger Ward first at 149.292 mph with 120000 dollars, followed by Len Sutton 140.167 mph 55000 dollars, Eddie Sachs 140.075 mph 27500 dollars, and others through Johnny Boyd in tenth with 7500 dollars. All prizes include accessory and lap awards.

Denver hosted the 37 year old Scott Carpenter in a 300000 strong parade marking his 22 day homecoming. Lt Col John Powers called it the greatest parade for any of America's four space astronauts outside the John Glenn event. Carpenter and his family then left for Langley Air Force Base.
