Francis Symons Former Butte Retailer Dies in Los Angeles
Francis George Symons 60 longtime Butte retailer died Tuesday in Los Angeles. He led Symons Dry Goods Co 1929 to 1946 and owned a construction firm. Survived by widow Helen and children Georgette, Jean, Frank. siblings and in-laws in Los Angeles and Butte. Last rites in Los Angeles with Hollywood Cemetery interment.

Anaconda became Montana's second community to observe daylight saving time joining Butte. The clocks advanced at 6 a.m. Wednesday local time, becoming 7 a.m. for Anaconda Co. operations, 24 hours after Butte started DST.

Columbia Falls Boy Drowns Daring Bailey Lake Rescue
Nine year old Steven Gesek of Columbia Falls drowned in Bailey Lake eight miles north of town while attempting to retrieve a boat spar. Tom Peterson, 10, tried to rescue him but both were submerged. Peterson ran six miles for help as rescue workers searched the 30 foot deep pond.

A four engine DC8 operating for KLM and leased to Viasa crashed after takeoff from Lisbon amid stormy weather. Sixty one people perished including ten children. nationalities included Venezuelan, Chilean, Portuguese, Spanish, French and Italian. Thirteen passenger origins were Rome Madrid Lisbon. fourteen crew aboard. An American, William Aydelotte, was scheduled but missed the flight.

Beth Francis 65 of Corvallis died when her car ran over her after she opened a gate at the Frank Pendleton Ranch near Wisdom Montana. The coroner cited injuries from the incident on private property with autopsy planned and beaverhead county handling further inquiry.
