Riggers at General Dynamics Quincy shipyard in Massachusetts land the 83 to lower bow section of the USS Butte, part of the Navy ammunitions ship program. Launching is scheduled this summer for both the Butte and her sister ship USS Kilauea.
UPI reports American Marines stormed Hill 174 just south of the DMZ, routing North Vietnamese forces after a fierce five hour fight. Five Marines were killed and 46 wounded as units fought from spider holes and underground passages.
Rep. Arnold Olsen announces new post office buildings to be erected in Lima and Melrose as privately owned facilities under the postal leasing program. Sites will be selected soon with interior sizes expanding from 620 to about 900 square feet in Lima, plus a 2,400 square foot maneuvering area, and Melrose enlargements from 4,800 to 650 square feet with similar vehicle access.
Columbia Gardens begins its season today with expectations of heavy crowds from children and adults enjoying the holiday. The park anticipates good weather to boost attendance despite potential showers.
Butte marks its 84th Memorial Day with 9 am services by United Spanish War Veterans Auxiliary at the Maine capstan in the county courthouse lobby. A parade will form there and travel through town to the Veterans Monument near Butte High School for ceremonies. Various groups plan cemetery services and color bearers from Armed Forces Induction Center will lead Barracks 792 and Chapter 6 of Disabled American Veterans.
United Press International notes the four day weekend drove traffic deaths past 400 with California leading at 38. Fires added to carnage as a Union Mills North Carolina home perished with six children and grandmother. A Shamikin Dam Pennsylvania sporting goods store explosion killed five. A Chicago apartment fire killed five with arson suspected. Local counts show varying totals by state as of 8 to 10 p.m. EDT.
Al Ahram reports an Egyptian navy vessel fired a warning shot across the bow of a Liberian-registered tanker entering the Gulf of Aqaba. The tanker reportedly turned away, heading back into the Red Sea after failing to stop for inspection near the Strait of Tiran as Egypt maintains a blockade to seal off Elath. The incident follows cross border fire between Israeli and Egyptian forces and the broader Gaza and Aqaba flare of the Mideast crisis. Officials cite Egypt's view of Tiran as territorial waters and the US position deeming the blockade illegal.
Scattered showers expected today and Wednesday with a 60 percent chance of rain today and 50 percent tonight. Highs near 50 and a low around 38, compared with 81 and 42 a year ago. Weather table Page 8.
Administration weighing a compromise to open the Gulf of Aqaba to all ships except those flying Israel’s flag. Nasser would relax the blockade, allowing non Israeli vessels through the Strait of Tiran into the gulf while an international convention would recognize Egyptian sovereignty but limit movement and permit Israeli passage during war.
The Supreme Court ruled Prop 14 unconstitutional, saying it allows racial discrimination in housing. The ruling, written by Justice White, rejects the California amendment that granted owners broad discretion in sales and rentals. The day also saw police power gains for evidence seizure and limits on birth citizenship by Congress.

Light rain and cool temperatures keep Montana’s flooding situation steady as a trough lingers near the state. Richard Kenneth Sorenson, 24, died in a one car crash on the Nevada Creek Bridge a mile east of Helmville. The Nev Ada County vehicle reportedly traveled on the wrong side before striking the bridge and overturning, contributing to Montana’s traffic death toll.
