Four Die In Headon Montana Crash On Highway 10

A headon crash on a western Montana curve killed four people from Superior as they traveled to decorate graves for Memorial Day. The wreck occurred about six miles east of Superior on Highway 10, totaling seven violent deaths reported that day.

Butte High to Graduate Record 498 Class Thursday Night

Butte High School will award diplomas to a record 498 graduates on Thursday night at 8 in the Civic Center. Principal Forrest Wilson announced the list. Dr. Leon H. Johnson, president of Montana State College, will deliver the commencement address.

The launch window targets next Thursday with plans to rendezvous near Titan II rocket stages and possibly capture dramatic space imagery.

Butte War Dead to Be Paid Tribute Today

Butte's honored war dead will be paid tribute Sunday in public exercises sponsored by the United Veterans Council of Silver Bow County. The traditional parade starts at 9 30 from the courthouse, with ceremonies at Soldiers Monument in Veterans Park across from Butte High School, followed by veterans ceremonies at cemetery plots.

Damaged Wheel Triggers NP Freight Derailment

A loose wheel on the first of 39 cars derailed 74 miles east of Missoula near Gold Creek causing a 39 car Northern Pacific freight crash. Two transients died aboard a flatcar with construction equipment as a spectacular fire resisted retardant drops. The wheel damaged track for at least 15 miles and the 69 car fast freight carried Viet Nam munitions.

Viet Guerrillas Escalate Attacks in Northern Vietnam

Viet Cong launched a series of assaults in Quang Tri Quang Nam and Ngai provinces as U.S. airstrikes hit targets north of the border. A U.S. officer and dozens of Vietnamese troops were killed while government forces reported mixed gains with Viet Cong setbacks near Da Nang.

Seismologist Dr Nile to retire from Montana School of Mines

Dr Stephen W Nile longtime head of physics and seismograph station at Montana School of Mines will retire after a career beginning in 1944 He plans to move to a 320 Ranch in Gallatin County and continue Coast Geodetic Survey work while aiding active seismograph duties at the school He praised successor Prof John McCaslin and noted his English origins and Idaho upbringing.
