Helena UPI The State Welfare Board refused $113 200 for Silver Bow County and $115 000 for Cascade County from its poverty fund saying no money remains for the year. The board has spent all $426 000 allocated plus $140 000 surplus. no new funds until July 1.
Bargain hunters halted the slide on the New York Stock Exchange as prices recovered about 13.4 billion of Monday's more than 20 billion loss. The Dow Jones average rose to 603.96, with 630 advances, 637 declines, and 132 unchanged after heavy trading.
Mrs. Annie R. Woolard, 65, a Kalispell area resident, was shot to death Tuesday afternoon at her Fairview home nine miles east of Kalispell. A 15-year-old boy was detained for questioning as the weapon, a 22 caliber revolver, was recovered. The coroner and sheriff withheld full details until the youth is questioned. The shooting occurred at 12:30 p.m. Survivors include two sons, Mike and William P., and eight sisters.
The Rev Bernard R Hubbard the renowned Glacier Priest died of a stroke in his Santa Clara University room. He was 73 and had been planning his 34th Alaska expedition. Hubbard had been in failing health since 1955 after a series of strokes.
Faith Bradley, 25, died in a Great Falls hospital from injuries February 12 near Neihart. Montana’s 1962 traffic toll rose to 75 as officials reported three more fatalities in two crashes on Tuesday. The week featured violent pre holiday accidents with two Missoula teens hit by a pickup while on a motorcycle. Memorial Day deaths were not involved.
The schedule for Montana School of Mines 1962 commencement includes a 12:30 p.m. senior luncheon in the Finlen Hotel Silver Bow Room, a 1:15 p.m. wives and mothers luncheon in the Copper Bowl, and an 8 p.m. ceremony in the Library-Museum Building assembly hall. James T. Harrison will speak on The Responsibilities of Citizenship as 36 degrees in course are awarded along with 32 undergraduate and 4 graduate degrees and three professional degrees to Combe Harnifan and Mitchell. Justice Harrison will receive an honorary doctor of laws.
Butte began daylight saving time at midnight Tuesday and Anaconda follows tonight. Anaconda Co. changes to DST in Butte at 6 a.m. MST Wednesday when it becomes 7 a.m. DST. Miles City awaits a final decision on joining DST.
At Geneva the Soviet Union reversed a draft East-West agreement on war propaganda, angering American Ambassador Arthur H. Dean and Valerian A. Zorin who coauthored the document. The move scuttled one of the conference’s two concrete accords and jeopardized a progress report to the United Nations disarmament commission. The Western delegation voiced disbelief as the Soviets demanded sweeping changes.
Partly cloudy today and tonight with highs near 65 and 37 lows east of Divide. East of Divide forecast shows showers mainly northeast and extreme east Wednesday, then west and central mountains see showers Wednesday night with cooler northeast highs 62 to 72 and overnight 35 to 45. West of Divide partly cloudy Wednesday through Thursday with a few showers mid and late Wednesday, little temperature change, highs 60 to 70 and lows 32 to 42. Table notes maximums refer to 12 hours and minimums 18 hours, with 24 hour precipitation ending 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Butte pays tribute to its honored war dead with a Memorial Day program by the Butte Veterans Council. The service opens at 9 oclock in the courthouse lobby, followed by a parade at 9 30 from West Granite to Soldiers Monument, then public exercises at 10 oclock at the monument.
The State Board of Regents upheld Dr. L C Brockmann in a dispute at Northern Montana College and upheld his dismissal of two faculty members while demoting two others The board also restricted Brockmann authority by requiring local approval for all teacher hires and drafted a policy statement reflecting the investigation findings.
Four window washers fell 26 stories from a runway scaffold on a midtown skyscraper. Three men were killed instantly and the fourth died while en route to a hospital.
Four inmates escaped the Glacier County jail in Cut Bank on Tuesday. Authorities said all four were held on felony warrants. The escapees were identified as Kenneth Fox 26 Walter LaTray 18 both Native American and Oscar Johnson and Don Macabee.
The market rallied in an unusually volatile session as stocks erased morning losses and recouped Monday’s declines. Trading was delayed by a printing system issue that ran over two hours past closing, yet most issues recovered substantial losses.
Bozeman Judge W W Lessley faced a rough day in Butte district court as he had to summon two special venues to form a jury for a highway condemnation case. After empaneled twelve, he warned the panel to avoid discussing the case and then delivered a prolonged defense of the jury system, recalling Burma and China under no jury, and noting the Japs once ruled without juries.
Three younger boys aged 9 10 and 12 reported being robbed by older youths using 22 caliber rifles. The Tuesday evening incident near the old Pittsmont smelter slag pile in East Butte is under sheriff’s investigation and a small amount of change was taken.
The Big Hole National Monument opens today marking the 1962 season. The 1877 Battle of the Big Hole saw Col. John Gibbon and 7th Infantry with 36 Bitterroot volunteers clash with five Nez Perce bands near the camp, yielding heavy losses and the later Bear Paw surrender. A self guided trail leads visitors past rifle pits, scarred trees and three memorials, with hours 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily and Park Rangers on duty.
North western Laos sees a fresh rebel offensive around Ban Houei Sai forcing government troops of about 500 to flee across the Mekong into Thailand. Rebels close to the airstrip while U S officials cite North Vietnamese support and two American NCOs reported missing after a nearby clash.
Adolf Eichmann faces execution after Israel's Supreme Court rejects his appeal. The court affirms the Jerusalem District Court sentence of hanging for crimes against the Jewish people and humanity. Attorney Robert Servatius plans a clemency petition to President Itzhak Ben-Zvi within 24 hours. The decision, spanning 20,000 words, concludes all further appeals.
