Butte will suspend business today for Memorial day rites honoring veterans of four wars. Stores banks offices and all federal state county and city departments except law enforcement will close as residents join in solemn tribute. The observance, planned by a joint committee, aims to be the most worthwhile in years.
Silver Bow County honors 180 names of men and women who died in World War II. The compiled roster includes William Ahe, Franklin C. Alden, John L. Angelous, Thomas Ashworth Jr, Jack M. Asal, William L. Babcock, John P. Barry, Fred Beadle, Cletus Beatty, Francis Bermingham, James Bertoglio, Thomas J. A memorial ode lists soldiers including Richard Kilroy Leo Kollman Edwin Krukenberg and many others inspired by Corporal Edwin Grantham who died at Ardennes. The piece recalls his reluctance to war and honors the dead with a refrain of dignity and memory across a long roster of service names.
Line of March moves from the courthouse at 9 30 o clock on Memorial Day morning. The parade travels east on Granite to Main, south on Main to Broadway, west on Broadway to Washington, south on Washington to Park, east on Park to Wyoming, and south on Wyoming to Soldiers Memorial park, where community memorial services will be held.
A colorful parade will start at 9:30 as residents from Butte and nearby communities join Butte citizens. The procession moves from the courthouse through the business district to Soldiers Memorial park for community memorial services. The program continues with services concluded in the park.
In San Francisco on May 29, France reopened a UN security conference issue by asking to alter the language of enforcement sections. The Big Five convened to study the bid and consider extending talks beyond June 6, with possible Denmark bid to join and Norway backing a broader admission. By James C. Austin.
Butte shows partly cloudy Wednesday with intermittent light showers and possible thunderstorms. Montana expects partly cloudy Wednesday cooler with scattered showers mainly west. highs 60 to 65 north and 70 to 75 south, with Tuesday peaking at 67 and a low around 32.
Lt Walter Harrington, a Butte veteran and B-25 Mitchell pilot, arrived on 30 day leave after ten months in the Mediterranean theater. He recalls a harsh campaign with Luftwaffe opposition, mentions meeting only one fellow Butte man overseas, and notes his awards including the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with eight oak leaf clusters.
Silver Bow county raced past the halfway mark in the Seventh War Loan program with $1,385,129.90 in E, F, G and other bonds, reaching about 54 percent of its $2,536,700 quota. Deer Lodge is second, Madison third, as district totals run 49.8 percent of quota. County War Finance Chairman Max Dean praised the showing.
Washington May 29 Representatives John Taber and Clarence Cannon clashed in the House Appropriations Committee office over a $2,500 annual expense allowance. Taber, 65, said Cannon started the fight, landing one punch before Taber restrained him. Taber sustained a slight lip cut and called the incident closed. Both have long service on the committee, with prior exchanges on the allowance issue.
U S Marines breached the Shuri fortress on Okinawa in a day long assault, taking ancient Shuri castle and bringing Naha under control as the western enemy line collapsed. First Marine Division swept through the ruined city with light resistance, signifying a major Japanese retreat southward. The assault began at 7:30 a m with swift progress toward the castle as Japanese were seen in the moat.
Major General Curtis LeMay announced that American B-29s destroyed all target areas in central Tokyo during heavy incendiary raids. The firestorm covered 51 square miles around the imperial grounds, with widespread ruins and ongoing strikes against Yokohama industrial districts as the war continued.
BEYROUTH May 29 French mortars were reported shelling Damascus, capital of Syria, as clashes between native irregulars and French troops spread southward. A siege at Deraa near the Trans- Jordan frontier continued with Syrian casualties and fears of a wider uprising after Syria denounced French troop movements in the Levant. Jamil Mardam, acting premier, said 100 killed and 300 injured in the unrest. Observers warned the Deraa fighting could spark broader resistance.
Washington May 29. Japan fired its naval general staff chief and named Soemu Toyoda to lead the fleet. Admiral Koshiro Okiawa was dismissed and made a supreme war councillor while command of the navy passed to the combined fleet commander. An obscure vice admiral was appointed to head remaining naval forces as American and British fleets press the war.
