Canton suffered renewed terror as 20 Japanese warplanes raided the South China seaport for the third time in 48 hours. More than 1,000 were dead and at least 3,000 injured in the aerial bombings.
Patriotic organizations will head Butte's Memorial Day events beginning at 9 AM with a parade through the business district and cemetery services. Divisions form at Montana and Granite, Montana and Quartz, and Montana and Granite again, before marching routes to Broadway Arizona Park and back to Montana. Leo Morrissey is active marshal with Thomas Bainbridge as honorary marshal. include police escorts, fire departments, veterans groups, school bands, drum corps, and numerous civic auxiliaries.
Senator Wheeler of Montana warns the Democratic party faces a split and possible defeat in November if Roosevelt aides continue to meddle in party primaries. He says Hopkins interference in Iowa strengthens factional rifts and could aid a third party or La Follette forces, affecting 1938 and 1940 elections.
The bound body of Peter Levine, long missing from New York, was found on Louis Iselin's Davenport Neck shore on Long Island Sound. Detectives identified the 12 or 13 year old from clothing remnants. a copper wire appeared around the torso. Authorities say ransom was demanded February 24 and autopsy will determine time of death. Federal investigators joined local officers at the scene.
German-trained divisions of Chiang Kai-Shek’s army renewed a three front assault in the Lunghai theater to destroy Gen Kenji Doihara’s force trapped northwest of Lanfeng. The New Shanghai report notes Chiang’s arrival there as operations continue.

Lifeguards rescued 185 movie extras who overtaxed themselves swimming clothed to qualify for minor roles in a gambling ship scene at Hermosa Beach California. More than 500 tested by swimming one quarter mile around the pier as guards on two horses and 30 surf boards assisted exhausted swimmers. The film shows a gambling barge aflame and sunk with 300 clothed patrons leaping into the water.
In Coolville Ohio on May 29 Ellsworth Hobbs of North Towanda New York, WPA worker, is reunited with his four year old daughter Betty Jane after an abduction a week earlier that police feared ended in death. Betty clings to her father as hundreds look on. A woman is under arrest in connection with the case.
The forecast calls for unsettled weather in Montana on Monday and Tuesday with probable local thunder showers and little change in temperature.
Twelve year old Peter Levine was located after months missing, joining Alice Parsons and Arthur Fried as cases unresolved. The search continues as authorities seek answers about the other disappearances in the metropolitan area, with parallels to the Tacoma abduction of Charles Mattson and his body later found near his home.
Paris reported that on May 29 French officials read U S Secretary Cordell Hull’s statement as backing the Anglo French entente. He reminded Germany and Czechoslovakia of their Kellogg Briand pact obligation against war.
Geneva May 29. The arrest of former Peruvian diplomat Carlos Fernandez Becula, named by U S authorities as key man in a vast international narcotic smuggling operation, was disclosed by United States narcotic commissioner Harry S. Anslinger. Becula was taken by Zurich police on Saturday.
Major General A. J. Bowley, commander of the Ninth Corps area, spent yesterday in Butte as a guest of Col. and Mrs. D. G. Stivers. The San Francisco native and West Point graduate, with a long service record, plans to retire next year after 46 years and will return to Montana next month to inspect the National Guard at Helena.
