A 22 mile pipeline crossing Harrison Avenue delivers water from the Anaconda Reduction Works to the new multimillion dollar concentrator in Butte. Water will pump tailings to ponds north of the plant and be reused in the concentrator. Workers lay the concrete enveloped pipe.
The Montana Board of Public Welfare approved grants of 70000 for Silver Bow, 52000 for Cascade, and 1700 for Lincoln to end the fiscal year poor fund grant program. Silver Bow totals reach 477000, Cascade possibly recouping funds. Lincoln county first since the mid 1950s. The board praised officials for tax collection and discussed a law raising the poor fund mill levy to 17.5 mills and exhausting proceeds before state grant eligibility.
A Standard Airways troop carrier with 64 soldiers and five crew members crashed during approach at Manhattan Municipal Airport. Five people were hurt, none critically. two crew members treated for bruises. Witnesses noted propellers reversed before the Constellation hit soft ground and burst into flames. all aboard evacuated calmly.
More than 2,000 are expected at Butte High School’s commencement in the Civic Center at 8 pm. Valedictorian Sharon Rose LeFevre, with a 3.95 GPA, and salutatorian Richard Elderkin, 3.91, lead a class of 365. The program features the Butte High Band under Raymond Sims, a “Pomp and Invocation,” the Butte High Chorus, and student narrator George Volksky with director Joseph Knuckey Jr.
Fair weather continues with mostly clear skies east and west of Divide. Temperatures rise into the 70s to low 80s with highs 70 to 82 and cool nights in the upper 30s to mid 40s. Isolated afternoon or evening thundershowers possible along southwest portions both days east of Divide and extreme south portions west of Divide.
Pope John XXIII suffered a massive internal hemorrhage and a suspected advanced stomach cancer. Vatican sources said he appeared to rally slightly with a definite but slight improvement, though no recovery was imminent. Doctors fought to stabilize his strength as the 81 year old leader faced possible death if it was God’s will.
Federal judges ordered steps toward school integration in Birmingham Alabama and enrolled a second Black student at the University of Mississippi as civil rights protests unfold in Jackson. Jurists allowed transfers and scheduled summer enrollment for Ole Miss law student Cleve McDowell while signaling readiness to hear transfer complaints.
Helena UPI Governor Tim Babcock and state regents chair blamed internal strife at Montana State University for Dr Harry K Newburns resignation as president. He said factions are driving away capable leaders and urged resolution before pursuing new presidents. He supported trimming Montana’s university units and questioned Eastern Montana College of Education in Billings without a full study.
The 63rd commencement at Montana School of Mines will award 30 bachelor degrees and four master degrees. Registrar W M Brown announced the ceremony on Tuesday for Monday at 8 p m in the Library Museum Building.
Butte resident Fred Lowery 38 began serving a second term for murder after pleading guilty to the Jan 8 1946 shooting death of Don McKay 38. District Judge John B McClernan sentenced him to 17 years and Deer Lodge prison was designated, with prior North Carolina second degree murder conviction noted.
The Butte phosphate plant is permanently enjoined from operating, ruled a public nuisance by Judge Victor H. Fall in Helena, upholding a prior injunction. The case concerns smoke dust and fumes affecting residents and Webster-Garfield school, with the plant preparing a new facility at Garrison and a completion target around July 1.
Butte will be an hour older than other Montana cities as clocks jump ahead to Daylight Saving Time at midnight. Anaconda follows, moving clocks to 7 a.m. Friday to join Butte, with DST running through Labor Day. Corporate shifts begin Thursday at 7 a.m. in Butte, affecting most workers.
Butte joins national observances with 10 am Memorial Day services at Veterans Monument in Veterans Memorial Park. A 9 am capstan ceremony at the USS Maine lobby marks the start, led by Henry Young and George Wilcox of the United Spanish War Veterans. Parade formation follows at the courthouse, with honorary marshals Henry Young and George Wilcox and extensive participation from city and county officials, veterans groups, and local organizations.
