Stocks Plunge as Market Hits 1929-Style Decline

New York stocks saw their sharpest drop since 1929 as trading ran 69 minutes late. The Dow fell 34.9 to 576.93 with 1,212 of 1,375 issues down, and total listed values shrank from 387.8 to about 288 billion amid broad losses including American Telephone, Du Pont, and IBM.

Lavelle, Butte grocer Anthony Lavelle dies at 81

Anthony Lavelle 81 longtime Butte grocer of Lavelle Grocery at 6 E Second died Monday in a local hospital. Born in County Mayo Ireland he lived in Butte 60 years and married Mary Cannon in 1914. He worked at Montana Power Co until 1921 then opened a South Main shop later moved to its present address. Customary Union Procedure Sets Strike Vote for June 4

Craft unions allied with metal trades met at Carpenters Hall to hear that a strike vote is planned for June 4 as negotiations with Anaconda Co remain unsettled. George Blair said the move follows customary procedure and does not guarantee a work stoppage. Negotiations resume June 6 with Mine Mill and Smelter Workers locals, engineers, teamsters, and electrical workers, plus the United Steelworkers bargaining agent for Anaconda Smelter Workers.

William Daley, chairman for Butte Memorial Day observance, announced the parade line of march. Laos Rebels Halt Northwest Laos Offensive After Capture

Pro Communist Pathet Lao rebels stopped a new attack in northwest Laos after seizing a Royal Army outpost nine miles from the Thai border. U S advisers reported from Houei Sai as King Savang Vathana set June 4 for a royal audience with Prince Souvanna Phouma to form a neutral coalition government. Maj. Gen. R H Tucker flew to Houei Sai to assess reports of renewed rebel activity in the area 200 miles northwest of Vientiane. President Kennedy had previously sent 5000 American troops to Thailand to defend against Communist threats.

Wreck Is Fatal To State Woman

A Hill County fatal crash on U S Highway 87 killed Eva Nicola of Hays near Havre shortly before midnight Sunday. Her husband Donald Blaine Nicola, 44, survived with injuries and was hospitalized at Deaconess Hospital. The death raised Montana’s 1962 highway toll to 71, compared with 91 a year earlier.

Weather outlook for Butte and Divide regions

Partly cloudy through Wednesday night with scattered showers or thundershowers in the Butte area. Highs 60 to 70, lows 35 to 45, with 62 expected today and 38 tonight. East of Divide sees similar conditions with warmer extreme east Tuesday. West of Divide remains mostly cloudy with afternoon showers and similar temperature ranges.
