House Approves Alaskan Statehood Bill
The House passed 208 to 166 a bill to admit Alaska as a state. It twice rejected sending the measure back to Insular Affairs and defeated a tentative kill vote on a voice vote. The bill now faces the Senate where opponents, mostly Southern senators, fear new Senate seats would shift power. A mid June Senate consideration is anticipated.

Earthquake Shakes Butte District and Nearby Areas
A brief earthquake rattled Butte district including Butte Anaconda and Philipsburg on Wednesday morning around 10 45 DST. No damage reported though dishes and light fixtures stirred and a Philipsburg woman noted blossoms fell like snow. The tremor lasted a second or two and was recorded on four seismographs at the Montana School of Mines.

Worker at State Hospital Drowns in Missouri River
Harley F. Green, 29, an employee of Montana State Hospital at Warm Springs, was found dead in the Missouri River near Great Falls after being missing about a week. Officials believe he fell in while fishing about 13 miles southwest of the city. His body was snagged about 20 feet from the bank and recovered after an hour due to a steep bank and thick brush. Green is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herb Green of Whitefish.

CAPE CANAVERAL Fla AP The second of the Navy s basketball sized satellites failed to reach orbit after a late night Vanguard launch. The 20 inch sphere traveled about 2000 miles before plunging into the sea. Dr John P Hagen said engines fired but the satellite did not attain the required horizontal velocity. This marked the fourth failure in five Vanguard attempts. The Army meanwhile had two successes in three tries.

Resources Group Sets Three Goals
A large membership a brass plant for Butte and a tri city air port for Butte Anaconda and Deer Lodge were adopted as immediate goals for Montana Resources Inc at its first public meeting Wednesday night. An enthusiastic crowd of businessmen labor leaders and representatives of several organizations attended the session in Montana Power auditorium. An intensive campaign for members will open immediately. There will be no limit on the number of members to make the non profit organization a better vehicle to promote Butte southwestern Montana and the entire Treasure State. More jobs for the community area and state was agreed upon as the prime motivating force for the Mining City organization. The group issued an appeal to do it now if building or remodeling is contemplated in order to make more jobs. It also advocates use of products manufactured in Butte and the state for the same reason. Kenneth Coughlin district freight and passenger agent for the Milwaukee Road presided at the session. He was chosen as a member of the temporary steering committee along with Ernest Salvas representative of the International Union of Mine Mill and Smelter Workers and Paul Holenstein businessman Tim J. Sullivan industrialist and former Butte mayor, James Keyes insuranceman and a member of the city county planning board, and William Egan businessman were named on a committee to work for the brass plant. The tri city airport committee includes Ben Dreher a realtor.
