London dispatches report a war of nerves as invasion weather favors the Allied plan coordinated with a Russian push. Eisenhower warns against premature action while Madrid and Berlin discuss rapid Italian successes and a potential earlier invasion. MacArthur announces advances at Bosnek as American forces assault Dutch New Guinea shore installations.
Hundreds of R A F heavy bombers hit the French invasion coast in a night assault. Allied daylight raids from Britain and Italy helped lay a widespread air pattern from Dieppe to Yugoslavia. Witnesses on the Dover coast described the moonlit bombardment as a near earthquake, with buildings rocked and windows rattling.
American armored units pushed within two and a half miles of Valmontone and opened fire on the Via Casilina to block the German retreat. Artillery struck Velletri and Artena while Fifth and Eighth Army infantry pressed from Anzio toward Rome, with Sezze taken and Arce Ceprano closing in on the Sacco valley.
Soviet aircraft in heavy strikes over the Gulf of Finland and Riga Bay sank four German transports totaling 17 000 tons. Moscow reported 30 German planes shot down in Friday actions and no major eastern front changes.
Henry Ruhl was sentenced Saturday to death for the murder of Matt Katmo and will be confined in the state penitentiary death cell until June 30 when the execution date is set. The sentence came while he is in U S marshal custody in Rawlins.
Veteran American infantrymen with heavy naval and air support landed on Biak island in Geelvink Bay at dawn Saturday advancing 350 miles westward in Dutch New Guinea. The push nears 800 miles from the Philippines with light casualties as troops move toward Mokmer.
General Douglas MacArthur issued a statement with the invasion of Biak Island, noting offensive results over the past eleven months have exceeded his hopes and that operations have advanced Allied goals with light losses, thanking providence for mercy in a Sunday release.
In Walsenburg Colorado a youthful burglar who broke into a lumberyard office took small items including a counterfeit 50 cent piece. He was later caught trying to use the slug at a theater. All stolen items were returned to the lumberyard.
The Silver Bow county campaign to back the World War effort will start June 12 and be the largest and most important drive for war bonds yet. Leading directors include Mr. McGonigle shop with Victory Volunteers, Mr. Ruhle county war finance chair, and Mr. Cohen head of retailers division. The slogan Back the Attack Buy More Than Before guides all efforts as quotas are to be announced.
Butte retail merchants will launch their Fifth War Loan drive at a Chamber of Commerce meeting at 4 PM Wednesday May 31. Chairman J S Cohen will preside. the event was moved from 7 30 PM.
Southeast Asia headquarters report Chinese forces under Lt Gen Joseph Stilwell seized Warong 12 miles northeast of Kamaung in north Burma after breaking the encirclement. Allied units also said to annihilate a Japanese Thirty-third Division battalion near the Emphal plain and advance toward Myitkyina while RAF and Indian Air Force hits target a river bridge in Manipur. Monsoon fighting worsens as Long Range RAF strikes north and west of Mandalay and Chinese offensive pursues Taungtzu fleeing Japanese forces near the Salween front.
Polish Ambassador Jan Ciecha nowski told United Press the Polish government in exile remains ready to collaborate with the Soviet Union. He said the government has repeatedly shown this attitude and is unaware of any Soviet proposals for a Polish Soviet understanding.
In the South Pacific, sharks fed on exhausted survivors from the Cape San Juan after a Japanese submarine attack. The S S Edwin T Meredith saved 448 passenger soldiers during eight hours of perilous rescue, as sharks bit liferafts and people, including two Negro sailors, were pulled into the sea.
German Propaganda Minister Paul Joseph Goebbels in Volkischer Beobachter declares Allied airmen who bail out over Germany lose Nazi police and military protection. He says airmen may face civilians, argues crimes by airmen negate war law, and criticizes enemy method of attacks on civilians and noncombatants. He cites fighter sweeps in Germany not aimed at military aims, and leaves unclear if civilians harmed airmen.
Final arrangements for Butte's Memorial day observance announced by general chairman W. R. Van Orden. A 9 am parade Tuesday leads to services at Soldiers' Memorial monument with Legion assembly, invocations, addresses by Lt. Corette and Lt. Cummings. Banks and offices closed. Mines run on Butte hill.
West of the divide expects partly cloudy skies Sunday with scattered afternoon showers and continued warmth. East of the divide also has partly cloudy Sunday with widely scattered showers in the west and extreme south portions, remaining warm.
