Evel Knievel failed to clear 13 buses at Wembley Stadium injuring his spine hand and ribs after a 140 foot jump. He vowed not to ride again and the British tour was halted with recovery expected about two months.
The United States plans proposals in talks with oil producers as it seeks restart of price and supply negotiations. Kissinger is due to speak at the OECD meeting and push for a framework to limit oil prices amid inflation fears and a price freeze through Sept. 30.
Joseph L. Schott recalls in a memoir that an FBI plan to move J. Edgar Hoover from Dallas to Austin in 1959 barred left turns after Hoover’s car was hit while turning left. He frames the book No Left Turns as a worm's-eye view of the bureau and Hoover without glorifying or damning it.
Beirut reports indicate Brig. Gen. Noureddin Rifai resigned after three days amid deadly sectarian clashes and mounting opposition. Gunfire and chaos drove residents from streets as Israeli raids added to the turmoil. over 100 people killed and 300 wounded in Lebanon’s worst violence in years.

A Treasury study shows that 14.6 percent of taxpayers earning over $20,000 annually receive 53 percent of federal tax expenditure benefits. In 1974 these loopholes cost the Treasury 58.2 billion and include extra exemptions for blindness, preferential capital gains treatment, and mortgage interest deductions.
Butte voters will decide on a 3.96 million mill levy for schools while contract talks with 39 district administrators remain unsettled. Bill Milligan says a 12 percent raise plus 120 dollars yearly health benefits were offered, but Teamsters chair Jack Schara disputes the agreement ending May 8 with no approval.
President Ford plans to ask Congress to authorize a historic debt increase as the budget resolves to a 68.8 billion dollar next-year deficit. House Ways and Means Chair Al Ullman schedules June 2 hearings to consider the rise, with the debt nearing 532 billion under temporary limits and 400 billion permanent cap.
Tass reports Soyuz 18 linked with the Salyut 4 orbital lab on its second day in space. Commander Pyotr Klimuk and Vitaly Sevastyanov found a welcome sign from Soyuz 17 residents and the systems were operating normally.
