After six hours of talks in Paris, France's striking workers won a minimum wage increase from 2.22 to 3 francs per hour, lifting about three million workers. The deal excludes other union demands on organizing rights and social security decrees.
Butte High Purple B s topped nine other groups to win the first Big Sky High School Girls Drill Team Contest with 808.8 points. Helena High Bengalettes were second, Copper Cadettes from Anaconda High third. Sponsors received trophies, parade and gym events judged on precision, showmanship, and originality as crowds watched.
The body guard Modesto Chiari, a former national guard sergeant, was shot early Saturday in a Panama suburb and died within an hour. He served as a guard for Panama's minister of government and was identified by authorities.
Four Montana Jaycees reenact the Lewis and Clark return at St. Louis riverfront. Don Henke Stan Todd Dennis Beer and Dick Sloan built rough dugout canoes replica of Yellowstone 1806 exploring boats. They faced rain and a light crowd while ceremonies occurred nearby and planned to fly home on Sunday leaving the canoes for a Missouri museum.
An 11 year old Butte boy died after falling about 50 feet from an iron pole behind KXLF television in Butte. He was playing with his brother and a neighbor when he lost his grip and landed on earth and cement. Deputies reported resuscitation efforts before he was rushed to St James Community Hospital and then to a Great Falls hospital by ambulance.
Chicago Daily News reports a top secret directive sent to all U.S. field commanders in South Vietnam orders a win the war within three months. The Saigon report by Keyes Beech says the aim is to break the stalemate and secure a decisive voice at the Paris peace talks, issued May 6 under Gen. William C. Westmoreland.
In Silver Bow County, Democrats appear to face a longer ballot with 64 names for state offices, judges, and county posts, while Republicans list 40. Democrats must choose among many contested races, including state representatives and two state senate seats, signaling more time in the booth.

John Van Elson a 25 year old from Billings Montana died when the plane he was spraying crops crashed on a farm five miles south of Star City Arkansas. Authorities said he lost control at about 250 feet and the aircraft burned on land near Cummins Prison Farm in Grady County.
Jim Flynn of Dillon was elected president of the Montana Jaycees, succeeding Don Bianche of Miles City. Roberta Smith of Columbia Falls was chosen state president, replacing Marilyn Lundberg of Dillon, and Tom Rimmer of Helena won best speaker in the Speak Up Jaycee contest.
A Soviet TU16 Badger bomber crashed into the Norwegian Sea Saturday after a low pass near the USS Essex. No survivors were found and parts of three bodies were recovered. The Essex said U S vessels and aircraft did not interfere with the Soviet aircraft before the crash.
