Senator McCarthy charged the Army with presenting a dishonest chart showing Pvt G David Schine absence from Ft Dix N J and accused a TV audience of being misled by blacked out marks and false impressions. Army witnesses testified the chart was not dishonest.
Helena Montana Highway Commission starts May session with bids to open on 10 road projects including gravel surfacing drainage and oiling across Park Lake Gallatin Teton Pondera Fallon Deer Lodge and more. Two gravel crushing and stockpiling jobs and Bozeman office shop expansion bid also featured with deadlines through Nov. 30 and Sept. 30.
The Defense Department announced a global change to U S military script issued at installations from five cents to ten dollars to thwart counterfeiters. The move affects Far East, Europe and other regions with about half a million personnel in Europe. no confirmed counterfeit ring in Japan was named.
U S Treasurer Ivy B Priest arrives in Butte for a noon seaport by auto and will address a 1 15 p m luncheon at Lloyds Cafe. She spoke in Missoula Tuesday and will appear in Helena Great Falls Billings this week with Republican leaders and local party members attending the luncheon and events.
Billy Danielson, 14, of Armington, drowned in a small pond at Belt after cramps while swimming with friends. Rescue efforts by bystanders and two Great Falls firemen failed. he died at a hospital. He was the son of mail carrier William Danielson. survived by sisters Vivian Bell and Joy Danielson. This was among several Montana drownings in 1954.
HANOI Indochina French nurse Terraube recounted two months at Dien Bien Phu saying she merely did her duty. The 29 year old blue eyed brunette spoke calmly of caring for the wounded amid fierce fighting and described it as the most formidable experience of her life. She noted new horizons in courage and devotion while soldiers and officers fought and died, and hinted at a lighter mood during a news conference before continuing on to Hanoi.
At Geneva talks on Indochina, East and West opened a new phase with discussion of concrete steps to end fighting. Western sources report some progress and optimism as Molotov avoided political demands. Vietminh leaders debated military issues while Laos and Cambodia object to assembly zones, urging Vietminh withdrawal.
Washington reports the government dropped prosecution of Val R. Lorwin on charges of lying about Communist affiliations to avoid a court fight over loyalty files. The indictment was dismissed after misrepresentations to the grand jury were cited. A Justice official said attorney William A. Gallagher was suspended. Lorwin defended the actions as a sign of political prejudice against him.
Secretary of State Dulles warned that a 10 million dollar Communist arms shipment to Guatemala may aim to establish a Red bastion near the Panama Canal. He cited tension in Central America, airlifts to Nicaragua and Honduras, and urged international action under the United Nations to deter further Communist expansion in the hemisphere.
Two Fish and Game biologists traced a Madison River fish kill to rapid water temperature increases after Unseasonably hot weather. Ennis Lake heated quickly, driving mortality below the lake with rainbow trout 64 percent of the dead, brown trout the rest. No evidence of dynamiting, electric shock, disease, or toxins was found.
The Senate approved a 484,095,500 dollar appropriation for flood control and navigation, defeating attempts to raise or cut the amount. The bill moves to a House Senate Conference Committee for compromise on earlier amendments adding 53,111,800. An amendment to fund Ice Harbor Dam construction in Washington was rejected amid concerns about fishery issues and prior delays.
In Bonners Ferry Idaho on Tuesday Gilbert R Bean Army Corps of Engineers technical liaison officer said the battle against the rampaging Kootenai River was not over but the situation was well enough in hand that some of the 500 Army troops could be relieved. The river held just above 33 feet and was not expected to rise again.

A man identified as Ludwig Larson about 55 was found dead in a fire that burned his living room over the Loma Post Office building. Sheriff Jack Bradley said Larson, semi invalid, was alone when two Royal Canadian Air Force men and Irvin Conn forced open a back door and located him leaning by the door. He likely started from a cigarette. Mrs. Margie Larson, Loma post mistress, was away in Havre. she returned after the fire was out. Loma lies about 13 miles north of Fort Benton in Chouteau county.
Four year old Kathie Dahleen Langdon vanished Sunday after a man in a car spoke to her in Burlingame. Police and FBI issued an all points bulletin for Ervin L. Arnold, 46, a welder who once sought to adopt Kathie and grieved after his wife’s death. Kathie was playing at her grandfather Peter Dahl’s home when she was last seen.
A twin engine C45 Air Force trainer crashed and exploded into a lumber yard in Newark Delaware. The pilot and co-pilot parachuted to safety and no ground injuries were reported. The fire threatened three nearby gas stations as the National Guard helped evacuate nearby residents.
The region faces mostly cloudy skies with light showers on Wednesday and Thursday. Light snow possible early Wednesday, with cooler conditions and highs in the 50s. Across zones, maximums reach mid 60s or 50s, with lows near 30 to 53, and continued cool, scattered showers through Thursday.
