In Butte area updates, teachers and trustees move toward a new contract while SS Big Hole clinches a raft race victory for the third time. Local vital statistics and obituaries noted, along with a report on kitchen range pilot lights going out.
The Montana Supreme Court set aside Judge Arnold Olsen's orders for scheduled negotiating sessions between Butte school trustees and the Butte Teachers Union. It ordered both sides and Olsen to appear in Helena to discuss making Tuesday's order permanent and demanded a transcript of Monday's hearing to clarify the threatened Friday final judgment.
Montana officials said 132 100 application forms will go to assessors in 56 counties and 41 867 mailed to homeowners. The simple form offers about 100 savings per eligible homeowner and must be mailed by June 30. No late applications accepted.
About 3 000 laborers backed by unions began shutting highway and building work in Montana amid a dispute with contractors. In Butte the strike idled up to 200 workers on seven road projects while some locals kept operating under interim deals. no talks are scheduled until mid June.
Susan Sherwood daughter of Mr and Mrs Frederick Sherwood of 1958 Grand was honored Tuesday night as Butte Central's top 1977 graduate. She earned a 4.0 average and was among 149 diploma recipients at the Civic Center ceremony viewed by about 1,500.
ARCO plans to keep Anaconda operations in Montana and transfer few workers as it revitalizes the copper effort with a two year pilot at Berkeley Pit. Robert Anderson said government price controls dampen oil and gas investment and ARCO will pursue North Slope oil profits to fund expanded opportunities.
Scattered showers or thundershowers continue through Thursday with mild conditions. Today’s outlook shows around 60 with a 40 percent chance of precipitation. More weather details appear on Page 5.
The Senate rejected Sen. Muskie’s bid to cut wheat target prices from 2.90 per bushel by a 50 to 45 vote, risking a veto as lawmakers pressed for budget limits. Farm state lawmakers opposed the move saying it would sacrifice wheat farmers to meet budget goals.
More than one third of Butte-Silver Bow deputies hold sergeant or higher, close to Helena and county forces. Of 64 deputies, 23 are ranked leaders, while Missoula and Helena show different distributions. The plan lists four captains, seven lieutenants, and ten sergeants alongside the sheriff and undersheriff, with several named officers and a fired sergeant noted amid budget and promotion disputes.
